Overall decor is simple and sparse
Mama Beach Residence once had this quiet stretch of sand on Ton Sai Bay to itself, but the mid-range property has been joined by a large modern hotel right behind it. The simple white rooms still have most of the beach views to themselves though, and all come with furnished private patios. Decor is simple and rather stark, but pops of color are incorporated and they come with small flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. There's no pool here, but guests can partake in a variety of water sports directly from the beach, and the included French breakfast is an added perk.
Scene
Apartment-style buildings on a green lawn off the beach
Mama Beach Residence sits on a manicured lawn with an open-air lobby below a stunning limestone cliff. Built in 2010, the hotel's separate three-story buildings around a central courtyard have a jungle backdrop that's now dominated by a glass, modern hotel. It still has direct access to the beach, though, and caters to a largely French and Spanish tourist clientele.
Location
Far down the beach, west of Ton Sai Pier
Mama Beach Residence is on Ko Phi Phi Don ("Ko" means island in the native language), about a 15-minute walk down the beach from town. It's within walking distance of nearby bars, clubs and restaurants. To get to the island, public ferries leave from Phuket and Krabi on the mainland delivering travelers to Tonsai Pier, from which guests must travel on foot to the hotel. Expect a 3-hour trip, including the 30-minute drive from Krabi Airport to Krabi Pier (also known as Klong Jilad Pier) and the voyage by ferry or private boat to the island. Phi Phi Don is the largest of the Phi Phi Islands, with attractions on the smaller Ko Phi Phi Le, like Maya Beach and Viking Cave, accessible by boat.
Rooms
Modern rooms with private balconies
The hotel's 24 air-conditioned rooms are in separate three-story buildings clustered around a central lawn. Not all have full beach views, with the cheapest Comfort rooms getting ground-floor garden views (and semi-private patios), while Deluxe and Grand rooms occupy the second and third floors respectively. The higher-tier rooms have private balconies with large deck chairs. All have a sleek, minimalist white decor with integrated wall shelves and bamboo plants for a touch of color. Some have sitting areas with small couches or a pair of white shell chairs. Mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi come standard. The bathrooms have stone basin sinks and rainfall showers (with additional handheld shower heads) that are open to the rest of the bathroom spaces.
Features
Beach with water sports, Thai massage, restaurant and bar, and free breakfast
From the hotel's white-sand beach, guests can rent watersports equipment, as well as borrow snorkeling masks and fins for free. Boats and guided tours that leave for cliff diving and the more secluded beaches of the neighboring island can also be arranged (for a fee). A gazebo on the beach houses the resident Thai massage therapists and sunset yoga classes occur daily on an open-air shaded deck. For dining, Mama Restaurant serves Thai and European cuisine for lunch and dinner, with snacks and wine served throughout the afternoon. The free breakfast is a French affair with cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, croissants, pancakes, and eggs. There are also a variety of juices, as well as coffee and espresso. The hotel's Cliff Bar serves cocktails, wine and light snacks from a covered hut right on the beach.
