Bottom Line

The Montra is an ultra small, three-and-a-half pearl boutique resort set in the hills over Lamai, Koh Samui's second largest beach town. There are only nine rooms here: spacious suites with dark wood floors, stylish furnishings, and pieces of art in each room. Bathrooms are large, with turquoise tile and big bathtubs. The suites surround a lovely pool which winds it way around the property. There is one bar/restaurant here, and other than the lovely grounds, not much else. It's a place for those who love quiet and relaxation. Expect a 10-minute walk to the main road for restaurant and shopping options, or take the free shuttle to Lamai Beach. Prices at Montra are low, charging a third of what the competition does, for far bigger and better living quarters than one gets in rowdier Chaweng.

Montra Hotel

Scene

Quiet and relaxing retreat

There isn't too much going on at the Montra Hotel. It's a quiet and elegant place whose guests are looking to relax and escape the Samui crowds. As the resort only has nine suites, it never feels crowded at the long pool in the garden or at the intimate restaurant. Both couples and families come here, the suites are certainly big enough for large groups, and if one wants to have a private party, the entire estate can be booked out. The small lobby is decorated with black furniture, black built-in cupboards, and Thai statues. There's more space for lounging outdoors, including a covered area set with a contemporary sofa and matching, hanging egg-shaped chairs. Garden grounds are beautifully landscaped with large ferns, trimmed hedges, and native trees.

Location

Quiet and peaceful location in the hills of Lamai, a few miles from the beach

The Montra Hotel is located in the hills of Lamai, Koh Samui's second largest beach town after Chaweng, in the southeast corner of the island. The resort is about a half-hour-drive from the airport and far from the crowds, as it sits off the main road up in the hills. The resort runs a free, regular shuttle into Lamai and the beach, or guests can walk there in about 10 or 15 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious and elegant suites with terraces set around the swimming pool

There are only nine rooms at the Montra, all of them suites. They are pretty much the same, with the only difference between Standard and Deluxe being pool access for the latter. All suites are spacious, with a living room area as well as a bedroom. Interiors feature dark wood floors, wooden writing desks, and original art pieces like framed photographs and sculptures set in nooks. Attention to small detail is lovely. Look for tissue boxes made out of cowrie shells and lamps with bamboo shades. Each suite is equipped with a mini-bar, safe, small flat-screen TV, DVD player, robes and slippers, electric kettles for tea and coffee, as well as electric mosquito repellers and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are spacious, with colorful turquoise tile floors, large bathtubs, separate rain showers, and plenty of sink and mirror space. Outdoor terraces are set with chairs and tables. The size and quality for what the hotel charges puts most Samui properties to shame, and it's probably the best value you'll find anywhere on the island.

Features

Meandering garden swimming pool, small restaurant, and free Wi-Fi

There aren't many features at this tiny resort, as it only has nine suites, and most guests head into Lamai for the beach and restaurants. The Montra does have one restaurant/bar, Hue, which serves free made-to-order breakfasts and then Thai and international fare for a la carte lunches and dinners. Guests can dine indoors or outside on thick wooden tables. The other feature of note on the property is the long and narrow swimming pool, set in a beautiful garden that snakes its way around the rooms and property. Part of the pool goes under a bridge in a darkened tunnel where one can swim. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Thai cooking classes can be arranged for a fee.
