Bottom Line

There are 208 rooms at this three-and-a-half pearl property set right on Chaweng Beach. Most of Chaweng's bars, restaurants, nightlife, and tourist haunts are within an easy walk, though it's removed enough to stay mostly quiet at night. The hotel has a choice of casual restaurants, as well as a large swimming pool and modern fitness center (not a common feature in Chaweng). Funky rooms have bright accents plus balconies, multimedia hubs, and and air-conditioning, though they aren’t that big. Those looking for a more traditional taste of Thailand, rather than OZO's hip decor, may prefer the Chaweng Garden Beach Resort which is a little farther up the road.

Oyster Hotel Review

OZO Chaweng Samui

Scene

Cool and trendy property with a focus on relaxation

In a town packed with middling attempts at modernity -- and plenty of old-school faux-rustic resorts -- the OZO is a nice change of pace. The open-sided lobby of the hotel has a fresh, contemporary feel that's well-executed. There's a central reception desk in a white, high gloss finish, trendy rattan egg chairs hanging from the ceiling, a small counter where guests can help themselves to a cool drink or a snack, and an internet corner. It's a cheerful, low-key hotel, despite it's trendy look, and the property aims to be a peaceful haven for guests to unwind. However, it's close enough to the lively center of Chaweng to appeal to those wanting an action-packed vacation as well. With this in mind, it's no surprise that the hotel has broad appeal, attracting a wide range of guests, from groups of friends, to couples of all ages, and families with children.

Location

A short walk from the restaurants, shops, and nightlife of Chaweng’s Beach Road

The hotel is set right on the clean, white sand and clear blue waters of Chaweng Beach. It is surrounded by many other hotels and resorts, as well as tons of restaurants and bars. Still, it's removed just enough to enjoy a decent amount of peace and quiet. Chaweng’s lively nightlife and shops that line Beach Road are just a minute’s walk from the property. Other attractions in the area include the large Central Festival Samui shopping mall and cinema, which is a 15-minute drive from the hotel, and the Phetch Buncha Thai Boxing Stadium which is also a 15-minute drive. Wat Plai Laem Buddhist temple which is around a 20-minute drive, as is the island's iconic Big Buddha. Koh Samui Airport will take 15 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Stylish and contemporary rooms with balconies and multimedia hubs

The funky look of the rooms at this hotel comes off as fresh and pleasant, rather than trying too hard, as can sometimes be the case on Samui. The decor is trendy, with plain white, minimalist furniture in a high-gloss finish, bright turquoise splashes in the soft furnishings, and dark wood-veneer flooring. There's a large, modern mural of traditional Thai boats going out to sea behind beds, and futuristic two-paddle fans spin on the ceiling. The balconies have dark wood decking and bright turquoise chairs that tie in with the interior design. All of the hotel's guest rooms can accommodate two adults and have king-size or twin beds. The Sleep Rooms have garden views, while the Dream Rooms overlook the sea or pool. Some are right on the beach. Rooms are fairly small but all have balconies, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, multimedia hubs, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, desks, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free bottled water, and safes. Swiveling TV panels help make them viewable from anywhere in the room. Bathrooms have a walk-in shower and a hairdryer, plus cool green and white tiling.

Features

A choice of restaurants, solid happy hour, modern fitness center, and large pool

Being one of the larger hotels in the immediate area, there are a decent number of features here, though given the hotel's emphasis on relaxation it's surprising that there isn't a spa. There are a number of dining and drinking options, though -- three to be exact. Eat is open all day and offers fresh, healthy dishes in a bright, open-plan restaurant. Stacked is an American-style restaurant with terraces, big-screen sports, and live music where guests can grab a burger and fries. It also has a contemporary cocktail menu. The Pool Bar serves casual food like pizza alongside an extensive drinks menu. A happy hour is popular among guests.

Other facilities include a small, modern fitness center with a universal machine, free weights, and treadmills. There's also a large outdoor freeform swimming pool. It's surrounded by sun loungers and blue parasols, and there’s also a separate children's pool. The property offers free parking and free Wi-Fi throughout. Computers and internet access are also available.
