Sunrise Tropical Resort

Guests arrive at the Sunrise Tropical Resort by long-tail boat and, if it's low tide, may need to walk through the water to shore. It's a scene-setting arrival at a hotel that's a casual place to kick back in semi-isolated jungle surroundings for a few days. Everything here is relatively modern, though simple and with a style that's similar to so many other mid-range Thai resorts. Guests check in at the small wooden reception desk in the welcoming open-air lobby, with tile and wood floors plus wicker sofas for seating. Expect to see lots of chunky wooden furniture and a few token Thai details like carved wood panels and vibrant textiles. The grounds are lovely, with lush tropical vegetation, tall palm trees, and pathways that wind through the villas. Views of the sea and the limestone karsts are stunning. Overall, the vibe is relaxed and laid-back -- much more so than at any hotel on the western side of Railay -- and the resort draws mostly couples and families, as well as groups of friends.  

The resort is on the east side of Railay and is reached by a 15- to 20-minute boat ride from Ao Nam Mao Pier. The hotel provides transfers for a fee from Krabi or Phuket airport to the pier and then on to the resort. It takes about an hour total to go from the Krabi Airport to the hotel and about three hours from Phuket. This is the quieter side of Railay, though there are convenience stores, restaurants, and bars nearby. Those looking to swim, or for more action, can walk to popular Railay Beach on the western side of the isthmus in about five minutes. Phra Nang Beach is a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms are spacious and decor is minimalistic, with tile or wood floors, beige walls, clean-lined wood furniture, and simple drapery. Bright pillows on the beds in some units add a splash of color. Despite having a traditional air, the look feels mostly modern. Villas are larger and more upmarket than chalets and can be connected to another room, making them suitable for families or groups. Some, like the Tropical Villa Plus, have romantic details such as canopy beds, though other rooms have furniture that looks just a touch outdated, with lighter wood-veneer surfaces. The Tropical Villa Plus also offers extra seating, a soaking tub, and a private outdoor shower with large potted plants that make it popular with honeymooners. All rooms come with air-conditioning, electric kettles, minibars, and satellite TVs; while many TVs are flat-screen units, some still have old-style tube TVs. Free WI-Fi is also available, but can be spotty. In some rooms, frosted glass doors lead to the bathrooms, which are large, but plain, and come with toiletries, hairdryers, robes, and slippers. All rooms have balconies furnished with wooden benches, and views are of the gardens or the pool. 

There aren't too many features on offer at this hotel, though its enough to keep most guests satisfied for a few days. The outdoor pool is small but inviting, with a stone border and lush tropical vegetation. A few wooden lounge chairs are available on the deck for relaxing poolside. There are no umbrellas, but trees provide shade. All meals are served in the Sunrise Restaurant, including a breakfast buffet for a fee. The restaurant is a lovely open-air space with wooden tables and chairs, and beams overhead; food is well liked by previous guests. Room service is also available, but keep in mind that while guests can bring their own alcohol, it's not for sale on the property. The hotel will provide assistance with activities such as rock climbing, boating, diving, and snorkeling. Though there is free Wi-Fi, it doesn't always work that well.
