Bottom Line

The 52-room L Resort Krabi is a solid mid-range choice for all sorts of travelers -- families, couples, and friend groups -- in the heart of wild Ao Nang. After a year-long renovation, the resort reopened in 2016 with a contemporary purple-and-white design (though a few remnants of its pre-renovation self, like the odd outdated furnishing, remain) in its rooms and suites. All units have minibars and free coffee, tea, and Wi-Fi and most have balconies or terraces -- some swim-out. At the hotel's center are two landscaped pools, including one tiered with whirlpools. L Resort's central location is its best asset; just note that many of its neighbors are party hostels and nightclubs and late-night noise is likely, especially in high season. It's worth comparing rates at the nearby Phra Nang Inn, another ideally located beach-facing property, but the rooms there aren't as modern.

The L Resort Krabi

Scene

A relatively calm and contemporary resort in the middle of Ao Nang's party district

Ao Nang Beach Road is a parade of bars, minimarts, and fast food, and the low-slung L Resort's wide, open lobby is a noticeable break in the jumble of commerce. Compared to the scene outside, the reception area is serene and minimalist. The low-ceilinged space stays dim even on bright days, but purple-and-white decor (found throughout the resort) perks things up. The modern look is new as of 2016, when the hotel reopened after a year-long renovation.

The hotel's core is its double-pool area, where kids practice their snorkeling and adults nap in the shade or chat along the water's edge. The courtyard feels social but sedate, with lush landscaping, two whirlpools, and water falling over Disney-like artificial rocks. The pool crowd provides a snapshot of the sort of guests attracted to the L Resort, whose clientele includes families with small children, retired couples, and travelers in their early 20s who want to be close to the Ao Nang nightlife.

Location

L Resort is the rare beach-facing resort in Ao Nang, in the middle of everything

Nearly everyone who stays here considers the location ideal. L Resort is on Ao Nang Beach Road across from the beach (most hotels are somewhat inland and beach-facing hotels like L Resort are rare). In both directions, the road in front of the hotel is crammed with shops, restaurants, international chains, pharmacies, massage spas, tour bookers (a diving and snorkeling center is next door), you name it. An alley alongside the hotel is party central and dense with nightclubs, cabarets, pubs, and backpackers' hostels -- so late-night noise is probable. The hotel is a 33-minute drive to and from Krabi Airport; transfers can be arranged through the hotel.

Rooms

Big rooms with a purple-and-white theme, though a few older furnishings remain

As a whole, L Resort's 52 units are roomy and modern, and share a sharp purple-and-white color scheme that's seen through glossy white floors, lavender ceiling panels or accent walls, magenta trim, and dark purple pillows. A few rooms retain the odd pre-renovation detail; for example, the Two-Bedroom Suite (No Balcony) still has dated red seating and faux-wood paneling on one side. However, it's worth noting that this particular unit is 1,075 square feet and is the only two-bedroom suite. It's located above the lobby, so it has the most direct sea views. There is also a 645-square-foot one-bedroom suite in this part of the hotel, but it lacks a balcony, too.

The air-conditioned rooms start at 450 square feet and most have a balcony or a terrace, with the exception those suites above the lobby. Four rooms have pool access terraces. All have 42-inch flat-screen TVs and minibars stocked with glass-bottle Coke and Sprite, plus Thai beer and soda water (Leos and Singhas). Bottles of water, coffee, and tea are free. Two towels for the beach and pool are provided.

Purple-tiled bathrooms have rainfall showers (no tubs) and purple-capped body lotion, shower gel, and conditioning shampoo. Other toiletries provided include nail files, combs, shaving kits, and mini hairdryers. Wi-Fi is free in the rooms.

Features

Two pools and whirlpools and a steakhouse with Thai and European fare

The main attraction at the L Resort is the two-pool courtyard. On the left is the smaller of the two pools; this one has four swim-up terraces on one side and a faux-rock waterfall on another. The right-side pool is bigger and more elaborate. It has a zero-entry border, an arcing wood bridge, and two tiered hot tubs down on the deep end. The pool bar is strategically positioned between the two pools, so no one has to travel far for a Singha or a snack.

The other main feature is Wanna's Place, a Thai/Swiss restaurant that overlooks the beach promenade and the sea. All guests have access to the restaurant's free breakfast buffet, where made-to-order eggs, pancakes, fruit, cereal, curries, noodles, and fried rice are on offer. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant serves a mix of Thai and European steakhouse fare -- including its signature dish, Angus tenderloin on hot stone. Like most restaurants along this sidewalk strip, this isn't the place for a quiet candlelit dinner. Wanna's Place can get quite boisterous with families and groups washing down their meals with Changs and Thai sangrias.

The hotel added a good-sized fitness room during its renovation. This room gets a good amount of natural light, and has a decent selection of equipment, including dumbbells, ellipticals, and lat pull-downs. There is no spa on-site, but the front desk can arrange in-room massages, as well as taxis and airport transfers. A shower room is available for guests with late flights.

A computer is on hand in the lobby, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort.
