Bottom Line

A seaside hotel with 283 rooms, Makedonia Palace is located near in the city center and right in front of the sea. Rooms are clean but slightly dated, but have all the amenities you’d expect -- such as minibars, air-conditioning, free toiletries, and safes. Rooms have small, flat-screen TVs and small bathrooms, unless guests choose to upgrade to one of the pricier room options. Its location in Thessaloniki, near shops and restaurants, is a real draw, along with the on-site bar. While the gold and blue color scheme is appealing in a traditional way, the nearby Hotel Nikopolis Thessalonik features decor that's a bit more appealing to some, and rates are often lower.

Oyster Hotel Review

Makedonia Palace

Scene

Mosaic tiles and a warm, welcoming atmosphere

From the outside it looks like a concrete 1960s building, but inside it’s considerably warmer, with attractive, traditional decor. The lobby of the Makedonia Palace is a mix of old features like mosaic tiled flooring and a curved wooden front desk, and new, edgier features including a spiral staircase and modern lighting. It’s a traditional hotel that shows some wear and tear, but it has a good location near the city center. Popular with business people and families alike, the hotel has a pool and business facilities but room decor is uninspired and not quite up to par for an upscale hotel.

Location

Almost in the city centre, a five-minute walk to the market and right in front of the sea

The sea-front promenade of the city of Thessaloniki stretches just in front of the hotel and provides easy access to the city and its shops and restaurant. It’s within a 15-minute walk of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, Archaeological Museum, and White Tower of Thessaloniki. OTE Tower and Arch of Galerius are also within a mile radius.

Rooms

Almost all rooms have sea views and iPod docks, but decor is a bit dated for an upscale property.

The hotel offers six different room options; all share a similar style of neutral decor characterized by a mix of wood and leather furniture, lamps with chrome accents, and a muted palette. Decor in suites feels a bit more modern, but even some suites have flat-panel TVs versus flat-screen. Amenities include air-conditioning, minibars, and in-room safes. The bathrooms offer free toiletries and hair dryers.

The standard is the smallest room type, and many guests traveling on business suggest upgrading to a suite, since each includes a separate living area. Guests overall often opt for a room with a tub because showers in some rooms run small. The Presidential Suite has separate living areas as well as an impressive spa-like bathroom with a big round tub and a two-person shower with seats.
