Bottom Line

The biggest selling point of the APA Hotel Roppongi Ekimae is its excellent location in trendy Roppongi. Restaurants, bars, and clubs fill the immediate area, and the Roppongi metro station is a three-minute walk. The two-and-a-half-pearl property has an eye-catching modern lobby and an industrial-chic eatery and bar, but decor in its 125 guest rooms doesn't follow suit, with a bare-bones look and no hint of style. In-room amenities, however, are a plus, as all units come with 50-inch flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Facilities are limited, but there's a full-service restaurant that serves hot breakfast for an extra charge and Spanish cuisine for lunch and dinner. The hotel’s nearby sister property APA Hotel Roppongi-Itchome-Ekimae is similar in quality but it has coin-op laundry and Italian dining rather than Spanish.

APA Hotel Roppongi Ekimae

Scene

Modern hotel with an energetic vibe draws business and leisure travelers

The APA Hotel Roppongi-Ekimae is housed in a modern 15-floor building on a narrow footprint. The modern lobby makes a good first impression, with its high-gloss floors, vintage-style chairs covered in black-and-white floral upholstery, and dramatic orange chandelier as a focal point. The small adjoining restaurant is even more appealing, with an industrial-chic look featuring exposed ceiling pipes, filament bulbs, and rustic wood walls. It makes for a cozy spot for guests sit down to breakfast or grab drinks and Spanish tapas in the afternoon and evening, and there's also landscaped outdoor patio. Unfortunately, guest room decor is a far cry from what you'll find in public spaces at this chain hotel. But guests staying here are mostly business travelers along with some tourists who'd rather have a fun hangout with a similar vibe as other spots in surrounding trendy neighborhood.

Location

In Roppongi near restaurant and nightlife, a three-minute walk from metro station

APA Hotel Roppongi-Ekimae is in the Minato ward in the heart of the trendy Roppongi district. The hotel is situated off the busy Roppongi Dori thoroughfare, a two-minute walk from Roppongi Crossing, considered the district’s center. Roppongi Station is only a three-minute walk, which is a big plus. Tokyo Midtown, a luxury shopping mall located in Akasaka, is a seven-minute walk. It's a five-minute walk to Roppongi Hills, and it takes about eight minutes on foot to reach Mori Garden and Mori Art Museum.

The National Art Center is about 10 minutes on foot, and it's about a 17-minute walk to Tokyo Tower, billed as the second-tallest structure in Japan. Most of Tokyo’s major attractions (Tokyo Skytree observation tower, Tokyo Disneyland, Sensoji Temple, and Imperial Palace) are within 40 minutes by metro. Haneda Airport is 20 to 40 minutes by car or 30 minute by metro, and it can take up to 90 minutes to reach Narita Airport by car, and slightly less using public transit.

Rooms

Well-equipped, with large flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and kettles, but drab decor

Guest rooms are basic, and while they're well-equipped, decor is a melange of drab neutrals with no color to add energy to spaces. Expect bare walls, inexpensive furniture, and budget-y curtains. Beds have comfortable Sealy mattresses but pillows are hard and pancake-flat (guests can request regular pillows at check-in, but supplies are limited). Rooms feature air purifiers, blackout curtains, and bedside panels to control lights. Some rooms have clothes hangers on hooks rather than wardrobes or closets. All contain desks, pajamas, slippers, mini-fridges, electric kettles for instant coffee and tea, and free Wi-Fi. At 50 inches, the flat-screen TVs are big, but they have limited English channels. Bathrooms are standard for Tokyo, with small, deep soaking tubs and handheld showerheads. They come equipped with hairdryers, soap and shampoo in full-size dispensers, and thoughtful extras like bath sponges, dental kits, hairbrushes, and bottled water. Units range from 118 to 237 square feet (11 to 22 square meters), which is average for similar properties in Tokyo.

Restaurant with hot breakfast and Spanish cuisine for lunch and dinner, and free Wi-Fi

The APA Hotel Roppongi-Ekimae has limited property features and no leisure or wellness facilities. The restaurant serves breakfast (for a fee) which includes fresh-cooked Western omelettes, eggs Benedict, bacon, sausage, and Japanese items. The food gets mostly favorable reviews, and so do the tapas, paella, and other Spanish dishes served for lunch and dinner. The restaurant also has a bar, and outdoor dining is available in nice weather. The hotel offers laundry/valet service but there's no coin-op laundry room (some laundromats are within walking distance). A 24-hour front desk and electronic check-in and check-out kiosk are on-site, and the hotel also has a vending machine, laptop rental, and lobby microwave. Limited parking (for a fee) is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests have lodged a few complaints about the hotel having only one elevator to service 15 floors, and wait times can be long. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
