Bottom Line

The Best Western Tokyo Nishikasai is a budget hotel in eastern Tokyo. It's far from most of the city center's main attractions, but links easily to the rest of the city from nearby Nishi-Kasai Station. The hotel's biggest draw is its close proximity to Tokyo Disneyland, a 15-minute ride away on a free shuttle bus provided by the hotel. The 184 simple, modern rooms are compact -- though not unreasonably so for Tokyo -- and the bathrooms verge on tiny. In-room features include flat-screen TVs and electric kettles, though many rooms are for smokers, which won't please everyone. There's little here save a simple buffet restaurant plus a laundry room and vending machines. For something closer to central Tokyo, the Tokyo Hotel Horidome Villa has simple rooms at comparable rates.

Best Western Tokyo Nishikasai

Scene

Modern chain hotel with casual vibe

True to the brand's simple and reliable ethos, this hotel doesn't do much to make itself stand out, but instead provides a simple, casual stay in mostly modern digs. Don't expect much of a social vibe here -- there's nowhere of interest to gather -- but that's not why travelers would choose this Best Western in the first place. The lobby is kept dimly lit, allowing the globe lamps in its recessed ceiling to add just a touch of atmosphere above a circular lounge area. Dark walls and wood-veneer tables are paired with muted blue cushions and carpets, along with some brushed steel accents. It all makes for a pleasant enough welcome for bargain-hunting travelers. The hotel is geared toward tourists heading to Tokyo Disneyland, though those who don't mind exploring via public transit also pass through here. The on-site restaurant attracts local seniors to its buffets, too.

Location

In Edogawa, walking distance to the Nishi-Kasai Station

Located in eastern Tokyo's Edogawa Ward, the hotel is three blocks from the Nishi-Kasai Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line. The area is surrounded by local eateries, but there are few tourist attractions within walking distance. The closest major attraction is Tokyo Disneyland, a 15-minute drive, or a 33-minute train ride from the property. A free shuttle is also provided by the hotel. An additional a free shuttle runs to Tokyo Skytree, a high-rise with fabulous views of the city, which is either a 20-minute drive or a 34-minute train ride away. For history buffs, the Imperial Palace is 30 minutes away on the Tozai Line. Haneda International Airport is a 25-minute drive or a 50-minute train ride, and Narita International Airport takes a little under or over an hour to reach by car or train, respectively.

Rooms

Basic, modern rooms with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs

For a value hotel -- particularly one in Tokyo -- we've seen way worse than the rooms that are on offer at this Best Western. In fact, the interiors are pleasantly modern, with patterned carpets and simple ash-veneer furniture. A few pops of red give the rooms just enough personality, and crisp white linens lay across all beds. Dark gray curtains look sharp and a spare piece of colorful wall art adds a dash of style. All rooms are on the small side, with Single Rooms barely fitting a twin bed and built-in desk -- though this is common in Tokyo. Flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and mini-fridges come standard. We found obvious wear and tear, like scuff marks and damaged upholstery in some Standard Rooms, though conditions improve in the Deluxe Rooms, which add sitting areas with sofa beds. If airplane bathrooms had shower/tub combos, they'd look just like the cramped pre-fabricated ones here, except these bathrooms also have Japanese electronic toilets (with bidet and warming seat). Non-smokers should note that of the Best Western Tokyo Nishikasai's 184 rooms, only 64 are nonsmoking.

Features

Buffet restaurant, business corner, guest laundry, free shuttles to Disneyland and Skytree

Features are slim at this budget property. Breakfast isn't included, but the hotel's Aletta restaurant is open all day, with a buffet that has the added perk of a self-service ice cream and sherbet cooler. The mix of Western and Japanese food gets mostly solid marks from previous guests. Each floor has a communal room with vending machines, along with an iron/steamer closet, and trousers press free for guests. In addition, there's a 24-hour coin-operated laundry on the second floor. The hotel has a cramped business corner with a printer and a banquet room that can be divided into smaller meeting rooms. Most important, free shuttles run to the Tokyo Skytree tower and Tokyo Disneyland. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
