Bottom Line

With eight floors and more than 200 rooms, the Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville isn’t a true boutique, but its many unique features -- rooftop vodka bar, sought after Signatures Restaurant, and homey bay window rooms – give it a distinctive personality. Within walking distance to museums, ethnic restaurants, high-end shops, and everything the fashionable Yorkville neighborhood has to offer, the location is hard to beat. Although the hotel is classy and clean, certain elements -- worn carpet in areas, stiff sheets on the beds -- make the property feel a little dated. Still, considering the upscale neighborhood, the four-pearl InterContinental offers comfort and character.

InterContinental Toronto Yorkville

Scene

Old-school and classy

From the clean, red brick exterior to the cascading chandelier in the lobby, and marble reception desk, the Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville is a good-looking place -- although the attractiveness errs on the slightly dated end of the spectrum. The concierge desk sits in an alcove in the lobby, decorated with a back-lit wall and shelves that display books and curios. Proof Vodka Bar is fun and bright with white patio couches and high tables. Signatures Restaurant, with its chalkboard menu specials and indoor/outdoor seating, is warm and comfortable, feeling just slick enough to look modern without giving off a stuffy vibe.

Location

Among an array of cultural destinations and sights

The InterContinental is located on action-packed Bloor Street in the posh Yorkville neighborhood, known for its high-end shops. Attractions within a five-minute walk include the Royal Ontario Museum, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the Gardiner Museum. The University of Toronto is directly across the street and the theatre district and Chinatown are nearby to the south. St. George subway station is around the corner, providing easy access to the Harbourfront, CN Tower, and St. Lawrence Market. Pearson Airport is about 25 minutes west. Parking at the hotel is on the pricier side.

Rooms

Clean and spacious but slightly stale

There are 208 rooms and suites at this hotel, divided over eight floors. Each is comfortable and homey with large bay windows. Wooden furniture and neutral wallpaper look pretty standard. Rooms on the higher floors have great views of Bloor Street and the CN Tower. Past guests have complained about street and subway noise from the lower rooms. Creature comforts include: a flat-screen TV, Keurig coffeemaker, and toiletries. Space isn't an issue, even in the cheaper rooms, and beds are soft. Some rooms smell musty and not all bathrooms have been renovated.

Features

Personality and patios, with an indoor pool and fitness center to boot

Not many Toronto hotels have much in the way of open-air space, but the InterContinental has plenty of outdoor seating at Signatures Restaurant (with its seasonally fresh cuisine), Proof Vodka Bar, and SkyLounge. Breakfast is free. The indoor lap pool is great for exercise even in the cold Canadian winter, as is the small but bright fitness center, which has a sauna. Event spaces are available for business gatherings, weddings, and conferences. There's also spotty and expensive Internet service, pet-friendly rooms for an extra charge, a jewelry store, and a gift shop. Childcare and limousine services are available here as well.
