Bottom Line

This three-pearl Tuscan countryside bed-and-breakfast in the hills of Sarteano fulfills many romantic expectations of the scene, with a lush landscape, crackling wood fires, super-fresh traditional cuisine, and a little outdoor pool. The 11 rooms and suites complement the ambiance, albeit somewhat more modestly, with few amenities that go beyond the usual at this pearl level. Its peaceful, removed location also means guests will need a car to get around and reach nearby sights; but that’s not unusual in Tuscany. Rental bikes and horseback riding sessions, which can be booked on site, allow exploration of the immediate surroundings. Travelers looking for a property with similar aesthetics but more attractions in walking distance could consider Santa Chiara Hotel in the village of Sarteano

Oyster Hotel Review

Agriturismo Le Anfore

Scene

Rustic Tuscan ambiance inside and out

No hotels in the hills of Tuscany can hope to match the beauty of the landscape, but Agriturismo Le Anfore makes a pretty decent effort for its three pearls. The mustard yellow stone and brick walls of the main building looks like a film set. Closer inspection of the mostly standard facilities dims the dazzle somewhat, but the effect remains romanic, from the 67 acres of gardens, olive groves, and grape vines to the simple wood and stone-lined rooms. The restaurant and lounge add considerable charm with terra-cotta floors, crossbeam ceilings, arched windows, and a large, well-used, brick fireplace, best enjoyed from the surrounding sofas with wine from the cellar. A petite outdoor pool completes the tableau.

Location

Remote countryside location where a car is a must

Snuggled cinematically in the Tuscan hills halfway between Florence and Rome, and a 10-minute drive east of Sarteano, this secluded bed-and-breakfast is not far from area museums, castles, and other attractions; as well as Sienna, Arezzo, Perugia and Orvieto; but a car is a necessity. Limited public transport exists in the immediate area, but takes five times longer and rarely worth the effort. From the train station in Chiusi, the 11-minute taxi ride is the only real option to reach the property. From Chiusi, local buses and trains connect to the wider transport system.  The nearest airport, San Francesco d'Assisi, is a little over an hour's drive in Perugia.

  • Seven-minute drive to Archeological Museum of Sarteano
  • 10-minute drive to Necropoli Delle Pianacce
  • 11-minute drive to Sarteano Castle
  • 13-minute drive to Cathedral of San Secondiano
  • 14-minute drive to National Archaeological Museum of Chiusi
  • 18-minute drive to Lake Chiusi

Rooms

Charming but basic rooms with small bathrooms

“Timeless charm” is the aim of the 11 rooms and suites on the property. This translates to classic Tuscan countryside decor, with wooden floors, antique furniture, flowery quilts and upholstery, and framed historical and art sketches on the otherwise bare white walls. All come with coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs with digital channels, air-conditioning, double or twin beds with premium bedding, and free Wi-Fi. The ceramic tiles and porcelain bathrooms are pretty but petite, with narrow shower stalls (no bathtubs), bidets, hairdryers and Prija-brand bathing products. The larger family deluxe room adds a brick wood-burning fireplace, while the suite gets a balcony. Views from all take in the adjacent olive groves, pool area, and/or distant hills.

Features

Restaurant service local pasta, olive oil, and wine, plus a pretty pool

The Tuscan landscape remains the star attraction here, and colors the features of this bed-and-breakfast. The bounty of the on-site farm works wonders in the restaurant, which includes locally produced olive oil, homemade pasta, truffles, and wine. Tuscan indulgence continues with the property's little but pretty pool, surrounded with a handful of loungers and a pair of white sun umbrellas. While there's no on-site gym, active guests can take advantage of hiking, biking, and horseback riding on trails threading the surrounding hills (bike rentals and horse riding sessions can be arranged on property). Wi-Fi throughout is free.
