A historic property with a lovely courtyard
Just behind Piazza Grande, the main square in Montepulciano, Meuble il Riccio is reached by a narrow, cobblestone street. This historic property, a former mansion, fits in seamlessly with its surroundings. A stone stairway (there’s no elevator) brings guests to the first-floor lobby, which has a front desk just in front of the breakfast tables. It’s a typical palazzo hall, with high ceilings, stone door frames, a sofa, a couple of armchairs in front of a fireplace, an ancient “Madonna” painting on the wall, family snapshots of the owners, and a lot of hedgehogs -- the hotel's mascot. Suites are entered from the lobby. A stairway leads to the second floor, where the standard rooms can be found. From here, guests can climb to the scenic panoramic terrace, with a gorgeous view of Montepulciano and the valley of Umbria.

In the heart of Montepulciano
Piazza Grande, right in front of the hotel, is the heart of Montepulciano. It was chosen as the location in the second film of the Twilight Saga where Bella saves Edward. Wine shops, and fine restaurants can easily be reached with a short walk from the hotel. The hotel offers free parking, but some report that it’s not easy to find.

Ordinary standard rooms, but suites feel more luxe
Il Riccio has two room types: suites on the first floor are newer and more comfortable, with gorgeous views and balconies. They are accessed via the lobby, however, which can make some guests feel like they have little privacy. Suites have classical interiors, with terra-cotta tiles or wood flooring, and wooden beams; furniture is classic but new (only a few antiques) and well kept. Suites’ bathrooms are big and elegant. Standard rooms are found on the second floor, and are considering more simple. All have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.
