Bottom Line

Originally a Club Med, this sprawling upper-middle-range vacation village sits on a blissful beach near Donoratico, one of Tuscany’s most popular waterside destinations. Sea and sand aside, the hotel has plenty of perks, including two large pools, sports courts, multiple eateries, and an amphitheater for nightly entertainment. Free kids' clubs are also available, though the presence of so many youngsters can make key areas seem crowded and cacophonous at times. Fees for beach towels and housekeeping can also be off-putting. Like the property as a whole, the lodgings are family-oriented, with 273 clean-lined and contemporary units with kitchenettes. Many have bunk beds. Guests preferring more conventional digs can bed down at the Canado Club, which has hotel rooms and apartments along the beach.

Paradù Tuscany EcoResort

Scene

Simple but fun spot for families in a lovely setting

Fringed with fragrant pine groves, and along a beloved beach lapped by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Paradù Tuscany enjoys a tranquil natural setting. The design throughout is contemporary but simple, with basic clean-lined furniture, earth-tone hues, and minimal decoration. Vacationing couples predominate in late spring and early autumn, but come summer, families take over. The free kids' clubs for 3 to 18 year olds with daily activities keep young ones busy, while parents monopolize the sun loungers (and take advantage of the beachfront bars). Unfortunately, guests will have to pay for those beach sunbeds and towels, as well as for housekeeping and cots. The scene can get noisy, too, once scheduled entertainment kicks in either poolside or at the nearby amphitheater. However, on a property this large, there always seems to be a quiet corner available.

Note that minimum stays of three or seven nights are required depending on the time of year. Like most Italian hotels, this one is closed in the winter.

Rooms

Small but serviceable chalets and prospector tents with kitchenettes

Room options include porch-trimmed Chalets and Lodge Tents, all of which are done in a contemporary, albeit simple, streamlined look. Expect basic wood furniture, a soft color palette that combines sea-blue and sandy tones, and small photographs of the area. Chalets range in size from 215 to 452 square feet, while tents are 516 square feet. Chalets feature air-conditioning, electronic safes, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and kitchenettes outfitted with mini-fridges and tiny stovetops. Crisp, compact bathrooms have rainfall showers, bidets, and hairdryers. Tents also come with shower-only bathrooms, kitchenettes, and furnished front porches. Bunk beds allow for tents to sleep up to seven people.

Housekeeping costs extra, as do cots and baby equipment such as strollers.

Features

Broad array of seaside activities and amenities, but some for a fee

Direct access to a sandy beach is a major draw here, and many activities -- from water sports to by-the-sea Zumba classes -- focus around it. Travelers should be prepared to dig out their wallet if wanting to use one of the hotel's beach loungers and towels, however, as well as for use of water-sports equipment such as canoes and kayaks. For a free dip, there are two large all-ages pools and a quartet of hot tubs. Ample loungers and umbrellas surround the pools. Happily, there’s no charge either for the kids' clubs, which provide age-appropriate offerings for 3 to 18 year olds. Playgrounds, tennis courts, ping-pong tables, bouncy castles, and babysitting services (fee) are among the other kid-friendly amenities.

In terms of dining, options include La Pagoda, an attractive buffet-style eatery that serves a broad range of fare for all three meals. The more refined Dal Maestro offers an a la carte Italian menu right on the beach, while Sale & Pepe is a casual pizzeria for al fresco or take-away dining. Guests who prefer to do their own cooking can buy supplies at Paradù Tuscany’s decently stocked mini-mart. A second shop carries sundries and fun-in-the-sun essentials. Bars are located at the beach and by the pool.
