Oyster Hotel Review

Best Western Plus Chateau Granville

Scene

Urban, multi-story chain hotel in central Vancouver

From the outside, the Best Western Plus Chateau Granville Hotel looks like another tall, generic chain hotel with a cement and glass exterior broken up by even rows of black balconies. Indoors, the lobby has dim lighting and contemporary decor. A cluster of beige sofas are accented with an orange leather ottoman and framed painting of a sunset hanging above one of the sofas. An adjacent wall is covered with 3-D squares laid into an abstract pattern while the remaining walls are wood paneled. The textured gold ceiling adds interest but doesn't help to lighten the space.

Location

On Granville Street in downtown Vancouver

The Best Western Plus has a walkable location in downtown Vancouver that brings the shops on Robson Street and a huge variety of restaurants, clubs, and stores within easy reach. There's a fee for underground parking at the hotel. Some guests have complained that the neighborhood can feel sketchy after dark (there's a peepshow place across the street).

Rooms

Quiet and clean, with private balconies

There are 114 rooms and suites, and each comes standard with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. The decor is generic: Think neutral wallpaper, industrial carpeting, and blue plaid window valances. Furniture is made of light wood and beds are made up in white sheets with a faint swirl pattern. Bathrooms consist of single sinks and bathtub/shower combinations covered with fabric curtains. Toiletries and wall-mounted hairdryers are provided. Some rooms get great views of the sun rising over Vancouver from unfurnished balconies. Double-pane windows do a good job of keeping exterior noise where it belongs.

Features at the Best Western are a step-up for this price point. The well-lit and spacious fitness center includes Matrix cardio equipment with individual TV screens and strength-training equipment. There are several options for meeting and event spaces, including a choice of catering and/or renting audiovisual equipment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there's a small business center open all day and night.
