Bottom Line

The people behind the Color Hotel clearly put a lot of effort into dazzling guests -- you'd be hard-pressed to find a corner of the hotel lacking fancy design touches or an art piece. The facilities are equally impressive, with four pools, two bars, a wine cellar, a renowned restaurant, and huge gardens. The location is great -- almost on the edge of Lake Garda -- although there is a busy road in between, which some rooms look out on. Rates are a bit below average for an advertised four-star hotel, but nearby competitors have fewer property features.

Color Hotel

Scene

An elegant and eclectic blend of local and international design

The origins of this hotel date back to the 1950s, though the main building was built in the early '60s. The property has been added to and renovated every decade since, and was finally relaunched as the Color Hotel in 2007. A huge emphasis has been placed on art and design, drawing on numerous local artisans and famous international designers to create original and imaginative interiors. The lobby has a tranquil Middle Eastern styling with chunky distressed wood furnishings, and contemporary design pieces and objets d'art are scattered throughout the rest of the hotel. The mood is laid-back and eclectic and the hotel attracts a real mix of guests, especially leisure travelers who seek a peaceful, creative retreat.

Rooms

Individually styled rooms with free Wi-Fi, some with lake-view balconies

The Color Hotel's 80 rooms are individually styled, and all put an emphasis on bold, modern design, with retro elements and quirky touches. Rooms are mostly spacious and bright and each has a color theme. Still, slightly dated wall-to-wall carpeting and thin bedspreads prevent them from being truly upscale. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi, minibars, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with DVD players and satellite channels. Bathrooms are on the large side and have walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, bidets, and hairdryers; bathrobes, slippers, and pool towels are also provided. Some rooms have furnished balconies with views of the lake, while others overlook a busy road.
