Bottom Line

The 30-room Hotel American Dinesen is a mid-range, canal-front hotel with a charming facade and a peaceful setting. Public spaces are contemporary, and rooms are classically designed and have modern amenities. The
setting is particularly delightful and positioned near enough the center to be
walkable. Daily breakfast with standard hot and cold items is included, and there's a lovely terrace with shaded seating where guests can take in the Venetian atmosphere amid surrounding rooftops. All in all, the hotel is good value for what it offers, though guests who'd rather be closer to the main tourist sights could try the similarly priced and more central Duodo Palace Hotel.

Hotel American Dinesen

Scene

Charming stuccoed facade with contemporary, albeit unexciting interiors

Approaching the Hotel American Dinesen from the waterways, it's hard not to be impressed by its pristine yellow stucco facade with charming green shutters and wrought-iron balconies decorated with pretty window boxes -- all nicely complemented by typically Venetian striped mooring posts marking the jetty where gondolas wait for tourists. Inside, the small lobby features reddish-orange flooring, wooden walls, and pops of gold in the velvet chairs and along sections of the walls. A relatively secluded rear terrace provides a contemporary space in which to unwind, with modern furnishings and a large parasol. Service is friendly and personal. Its cozy vibe attracts primarily couples, but families will likely be content here as well.

Location

Set in largely residential and quiet Dorsoduro district on particularly pretty canal

The hotel is located on a bright, quiet, particularly picturesque canal in the Dorsoduro district on the south side of the island. The area is largely a residential neighborhood of Venice, which is less crowded and hectic than other parts of the city. But there is plenty within walking distance, and the hotel is just a minute walk from the Grand Canal. There is also plenty in the way of art in the surrounds, with
the renowned Guggenheim Collection and Accademia Gallery just a few minutes' walk away. The main touristic center around St. Mark's Square is 15 minutes away on foot, and gondolas rides can be found on the jetty right in front of the hotel.

Rooms

Classically Venetian-style rooms, many with canal-view balconies

The hotel has 28 rooms plus two suites, most of which are decorated in typically traditional Venetian styling with silk fabric wall coverings, tasseled drapes, and gilt light fixtures and lamps. Several open to small balconies overlooking the charming San Vio canal and the Grand Canal beyond. Specifically, all Superior Rooms have canal views, and no Classic Rooms do. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with Sky channels and Pay-Per-View, as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities. Climate control is also common to all rooms, and well-finished bathrooms include wall-mounted hairdryers, heated towel rails, and either stall showers or shower/tub combos. As windows aren't covered with screens, mosquitos can be an issue. The hotel also has three modern apartments with terrace views available in an adjacent building. Rooms overlooking the terrace can be a bit noisy during breakfast.
