There are two buildings making up the 32-room Hotel Colombina near St. Mark’s Square. There is the main building with upscale rooms -- some overlooking the canal running under the Bridge of Sighs -- and there is also an annex building, the Locanda Remedio, which has mid-range rooms. The hotel has an excellent location behind the Basilica di San Marco and is less than a five-minute walk to the shops, restaurants and architecture of St. Mark’s Square. Famous theaters Goldoni, La Fenice and Malibran are all within a 10-minute walk. Another upscale hotel, the Hotel a La Commedia** **is more expensive and not located on a canal, but has a lovely outdoor rooftop bar.
Scene
Cozy, intimate common spaces in main building and hallway breakfast in annex
The main lobby of the Hotel Colombina is a cozy space decorated with Venetian paintings. There are matching couches and round back chairs upholstered in red and gold, and behind the curved front desk is a charming old-fashioned, wooden hotel key cabinet where room-keys hang on maroon, tasseled key chains. Common areas in the main building are small. There is an intimate bar with decorative touches including an ornate liquor cabinet, and a breakfast room with large, gorgeous paintings of busy canal life. Behind the main building is the annex, which also serves a free breakfast in its smaller lobby hallway on round-top tables.
Location
Near St. Mark’s Square, on the canal that leads to the Bridge of Sighs
The Hotel Colombina is in a perfect location for tourists. It’s directly behind the Basilica di San Marco and less than a few-minute walk from the bustling shops and restaurants of St. Mark’s Square, but far enough away that guests can enjoy a quieter locale. The hotel is located on the Rio della Canonica, also known as Rio del Ponte dei Sospiri or Small Canal of the Sighs Bridge, one of the more famous attractions in Venice. The hotel has its own water landing and is a seven-minute walk from the San Marco/Valaresso vaporetto stop.
Rooms
Some rooms have canal views, and the Rialto Suite has a rooftop terrace
There are several room types at the Hotel Colombina, including larger suites, the Rialto being the best. It has a rooftop terrace with seating and spectacular 360 degree views of the city, including the domes of the Basilica di San Marco. Other rooms are decorated in warm colors with cozy furnishings and some have exposed wooden beams. All rooms have minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The annex rooms are more modest, and guests have complained about the low ceilings in some rooms that don’t allow for standing up in all areas.
Features
Private water landing and many rooms with canal views
Hotel Colombina has its own water landing making it easier to reach for travelers with luggage. A free breakfast is served in both the main building and the annex and includes pastries and fruits, but no hot food. The main building has a quaint, small bar with a few tables, and a computer is available on the ground floor.
