Hotel Principe is a formal, upscale 139-room hotel with classic touches in the Cannaregio district on the Grand Canal. The view is amazing on the terrace overlooking the canal where guests can enjoy all meals, including the free breakfast. It’s a four-minute walk to the Santa Lucia train station but farther way from more traditional tourist destinations like San Marco. The furnishings are traditional, and some guests have complained of small rooms and unpleasant odors. It’s worth comparing the hotel Principe to the Carnival Palace Hotel which is more modern but farther from the train station.
Scene
Formal hotel with terrace overlooking canal
The Hotel Principe has a classic lobby with marble floors, tapestry rugs and a long, wooden front desk. Adding to the formal feel of the hotel are the paintings and decor, including hallway sconces and gilded mirrors. There’s a classic Venetian restaurant with traditional white linens. The on-site sushi bar is less formal and offers a full bar. The highlight of the hotel is the long terrace practically level with the canal with a ledge of red flowers in the summer. Guests are served breakfast on the terrace, but lunch and dinner can also be served at one of the terrace's tables.
Location
On the Grand Canal near Santa Lucia railway station
The Hotel Principe is on the Grand Canal in Cannaregio, just a four-minute walk from the Santa Lucia railway station. The walk to the Piazzale Roma bus terminal will take eight minutes, but it's a significantly longer trek to Venice's more popular tourist destinations such as San Marco and Rialto. In the hotel's immediate vicinity are restaurants, similar hotels, and the Parco Savorgnan, a picturesque, peaceful park, ideal for quiet walks away from Venice's more well-trodden highlights.
Rooms
Formal rooms some with canal views
There are several room categories at the Hotel Principe, and guests have complained that some are small. Choice rooms come with exquisite views of the canal, especially those with small balconies almost level with the water. Some of the rooms have more traditional design touches such as chandeliers, heavy curtains, and decorative wallpaper; the bedspreads may feel a tad dated to some. Bathrooms are simply decorated in mostly white. Some have bathtubs, but the rest come with shower stalls. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, small desks, safe, minibars, and (for a fee) Wi-Fi.
Features
Beautiful terrace over the Grand Canal and free breakfast
The Hotel Principe is one of the few in Venice with a terrace almost level with the Grand Canal; it’s a picturesque space to enjoy the free breakfast, including eggs and bacon, or to have a glass of wine later in the day. There is an restaurant serving Venetian and Italian cuisine and a sushi bar that has a full beverage bar. Babysitting services are available for a fee. For the business traveler, there are three meeting rooms equipped with microphones, projectors and Wi-Fi.
