Bottom Line

The Altwienerhof is a small, mid-range hotel near lots of public transportation options and within a short walk of Mariahilfer Strasse, known for its great shopping. The hotel is housed in a building dating back to 1892, and its age shows: both in the elegant old furnishings and the creaky floors. The rooms fit into the character of the hotel, but despite the attempt at period furnishing, they're missing finishing touches as well as most modern amenities. Free breakfast and Wi-Fi help keep costs low.

Altwienerhof

Scene

Older building constructed in the Viennese Biedermeier style

Popular with leisure travelers who appreciate value lodging and old-fashioned decor, the Altwienerhof is designed in the Viennese Biedermeier style, a restrained, more utilitarian 19th-century look than the classical styles which preceded it. Still ornate to the modern eye, the lobby's marble floors are laid out in geometric designs, with wood veneer furniture, framed etchings, and flora and fauna motifs showing up in murals and upholstery. The bright lobby's arrangement of painted iron lamps, tables, chairs, desks, and a small bar give it a quirky, chaotic atmosphere that's subdued by a charming glass ceiling and views out into the garden courtyard, which is open seasonally.

Location

In Rudolfsheim-Funfhaus, near shopping on Mariahilfer Strasse

Although the hotel is located on a side street, a nearby school and a major freeway prevent the property from being as quiet as it could be. It's a seven-minute walk to Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna’s longest shopping street that's popular with tourists for its numerous restaurants and shops. There is easy accessibility to public transportation, including the Gumpendorfer Street U-Bahn, two minutes on foot from the hotel, and Westbahnhof train station, a 10-minute walk away. The historic Schonbrunn Palace is a 10-minute drive from the hotel and the Vienna International Airport is a half-hour drive away.

Rooms

Large rooms with dated amenities and limited modern conveniences

Envisioned as old Viennese apartments, the Altwienerhof's 32 rooms are furnished with classic Biedermeier-style furnishings and have solid green or red-and-gold patterned carpets. The Standard and Double Rooms fall well short of the period atmosphere that the Suites more successfully deliver though, with tube or flat-screen TVs awkwardly placed on veneered wood tables that look more suited for storing a candle and ink-well. Unsightly cables and wires are in plain view, yet there are no mini-fridges or coffeemakers. The marble bathrooms are attractive, if slightly cramped, and some of the glass walk-in showers could use updating and/or maintenance.

Features

Garden courtyard, bar and lounge, wine cellar, and free buffet breakfast

The Altwienerhof's restaurant dining room is a treat, with its nature-scene wall mural and original wooden decorative embellishments. It serves a changing seasonal menu of Viennese and French cuisine, with a nightly tasting menu, and a traditional breakfast buffet spread is included in room rates. There's also a bar in the lobby, and though the space is tiny, it's backed up by a large wine cellar that has hundreds of international and regional bottles -- some 18,000 tucked away under the ambient room's brick arches.
