Bottom Line

A historic, upper-mid-range hotel with 309 rooms and Vienna’s largest hotel ballroom, the Savoyen Vienna is popular with business travelers thanks to its financial district location and meeting spaces that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. Rooms are modern and come with desks and free Wi-Fi. The generic decor in rooms and common areas might not be to everyone’s taste, but there’s little complaint about the breakfast buffet, which has gluten-free options. A small fitness center and terrace with views of Vienna are nice perks.

Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen Vienna

Scene

With historic exteriors and modern interiors, this hotel is popular with business travelers.

Housed in the former Austrian State Printing House, the Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen Vienna looks charmingly historic from the outside. Inside, the daylight-bathed atrium in the lounge floods the place with light, and is the focal point of the hotel. There’s a comely blend of tradition and modernity, but nothing that stands out as particularly chic or trendy. The interiors of the hotel are contemporary, with comfortable seating and lounge areas just off the lobby. Large botanical photographs hang from the walls in the lounge and in the rooms. Dining areas and other lounges are sleekly decorated with modern designs. The large restaurant on the second floor has banquet-style seating and bold, colorful Asian-inspired details. The property attracts a good mix of business travelers and, to a lesser extent, tourists.

Location

In Vienna's center -- on the Rennweg -- and walking distance to the inner ring district

Situated in the heart of Vienna’s diplomatic district, Hotel Savoyen is an ideal starting point for business appointments in the city center or for discovering the old town of Vienna. Traveling from the airport takes 20 minutes on the S7 train to Rennweg Station, right next to the hotel. It's a 20-minute walk to the city center, or there’s a tram stop at Rennweg Station from which guests can catch the 71 to the city. The Palace Gardens at Belvedere is a leisurely 15-minute walk away and the Botanical Gardens are a five-minute walk away. Vienna’s State Opera is 20 minutes from the hotel by train.

Rooms

Comfortable rooms have simple decor and large bathrooms.

The medium-sized rooms are decorated with red accent walls and flowery artwork, and come with modern bathrooms and bidets. Each room has a desk and seating area, along with spacious closets and electronic safes that can accommodate laptops. Pillow menus allow guests to choose what kind of pillow suits them best. Executive Rooms come with free welcome drinks and access to a self-service executive lounge that's regularly stocked with food; it's a good place for a light lunch or afternoon snack. Light sleepers may want to ask for a room with inner courtyard views, as it will mask the noise of the busy traffic found in street-facing rooms.

Features

Buffet breakfast with vegetarian and gluten-free options, plus an enormous ballroom

The breakfast buffet at the Savoyen gets rave reviews and includes gluten-free and lactose-free options. Omelets and eggs are made-to-order and there is an excellent array of fruits, cereals, cheeses, meats, and baked goods. The hotel also has the city's largest ballroom, which, while grand in size, looks dated due to chintzy circular lights. The hotel’s restaurant, Prinz von Savoyen, offers up Mediterranean cuisine in a tangerine-colored environment that may not be to everyone's liking. The fitness center is trendier, with large glass mirrors, but it consists of nothing more than a few cardio machines. There's also a sauna and a steam room on the fifth floor.
