Bottom Line

Pension Nossek is a small, historic inn in the heart of Vienna's first district. It compares well to other pensions, with its traditional decor and excellent location overlooking the Graben, right next to St. Stephen's Cathedral -- plus it's where Mozart once resided. The three-pearl property's 31 guest rooms have charming, period decor, with AC, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no kettles. Standard rooms lack mini-fridge and many units have shared bathrooms. Upgraded rooms add well-stocked minibars, and Suites with separate seating areas are available. Features include a free continental breakfast in a pretty, formal breakfast room and lobby lounge, but there's no fitness room or parking available on-site. Travelers looking for more contemporary accommodations can consider the nearby Pertschy Palais Hotel, although it lacks AC.

Pension Nossek

Scene

Historic pension on the top floors of an 18th-century building once inhabited by Mozart

The Art Deco Pension Nossek opened in 1908, on the upper floors of an existing 18th-century building where Mozart once lived (and composed "The Abduction from the Seraglio") in the 1780s. Since the pension isn't on the ground floor, guests have to take a central elevator, or the staircase that winds around it, up to a small reception room. Traditional furniture and antique decor fill rooms with parquet floors and high ceilings. Other than the breakfast room, the only common space is a small lounge with attractive crown moulding above yellow walls, and a seating area with a green leather couch and armchairs. The hotel mostly draws sightseeing couples, in addition to some families and friends traveling in groups.

Location

In the historic city center, overlooking the Graben, near shopping and dining

Pension Nossek is located in the heart of Vienna's historic, and tourist-heavy, first district. It's right along the Graben, once an ancient Roman defensive trench, the pedestrian street is now lined with restaurants, cafes, shops, and hosts numerous outdoor markets. The Column of Trinity is a minutes' walk away past one of the street's picturesque fountains. It’s a five-minute walk to both St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Hofburg Palace. For more shopping, the busy street of Karntner Strasse takes eight minutes to reach on foot. The Stephansplatz U-Bahn stop is just a three-minute walk away. Vienna International Airport is about a 22-minute drive away, or a 34-minute trip on public transportation.

Pension Kossek has 31 guest rooms with high ceilings, parquet wood floors, and traditional decor including floral-print window dressings, Oriental rugs, and vintage wooden furniture. All units have air-conditioning, but few amenities. Small standard rooms have courtyard views, twin beds, tiny seating areas with tables and chairs, and armoires. Free Wi-Fi and small flat-screen TVs are standard, but there are no mini-fridges or kettles, and several have shared bathrooms, though some have their own small walk-in showers. Double Rooms add ensuite bathrooms with either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, along with minibars. They have twin beds joined together on wooden frames, with small seating areas that have a pair of chairs and a small table. Upgraded units offer views of the Graben.
