Bottom Line

Tucked in a tropical garden and also offering stunning sea views and beach access, the three-pearl Mai House Resort offers peace and quiet without being isolated from downtown Duong Duong, just a seven-minute drive away. It’s all about relaxing here, and guests can do so by the infinity pool, on the sunbeds at Long Beach, or in the partially open-air spa. The 30 spacious bungalows are simple and airy. They come with mini-fridges, mosquito nets, and beach towels; the lack of TVs only further emphasizes the hotel’s commitment to providing an escape. The property is family-friendly, but couples in particular love the serene vibe, plus the romantic candlelit dinners at the restaurant (which also offers free breakfast buffets). For lower rates, La Mer Resort Phu Quoc has family-style bungalows and a bigger pool, but no direct beach access.

Mai House Resort

Scene

Intimate, well-maintained, and scenic retreat with an emphasis on space and privacy attracts couples

Built by a couple as a labor of love, this small resort prides itself as an escape from busy city life, offering a calming but casual retreat that allows for plenty of space and privacy. The hotel, designed to embrace Vietnamese culture, infuses traditional building materials like thatched roofs and terra-cotta tiles into its framework. Yearly renovations keep the property in impressive shape; from the freshly painted walls to the palm leaves on the roofs and the simple but lush gardens, common areas look lovingly maintained without coming off as overly manicured. Open-air spaces offer breathtaking views of the beach. Individual bungalows housing the rooms are well spaced out, and the emphasis on privacy means that there are no more than 60 guests on-site at any given time. Although kid-friendly, the resort’s quiet atmosphere and rather romantic setup mostly attracts couples.

Location

Picturesque perch on Long Beach; seven-minute drive to town and 15 minutes to the airport

The hotel’s location directly on Long Beach is, unsurprisingly, spectacular, making for eye-popping views from almost anywhere on-site. There are also several restaurants and shops within walking distance, so the property doesn’t feel too isolated. Cars do come in handy though, as the main town of Duong Duong is a seven-minute drive away. Popular attractions like the Dinh Cau Temple and the night market are both about a 10-minute drive away. The famous Phu Quoc Prison is a 30-minute drive away. Phu Quoc International Airport is a quick 15 minutes away by car. Airport transfers aren’t provided.

Rooms

Spacious, simple, and tranquil bungalows with balconies, four-poster beds, and mini-fridges

Thatched roof bungalows come in Standard, Superior, or Deluxe varieties and have garden, pool, or sea views, all of which are lovely. Ranging from 387 square feet to 1,614 square feet, they easily accommodate couples or full families. Furnishings are on the simple side, but four-poster double or queen beds with classic gold Vietnamese imprints on the headboards, brick wall details, terra-cotta tiles, and high ceilings combine for cozy and airy spaces. Mosquito nets and coils are thoughtfully provided, and lemongrass-scented essential oils are a calming touch. Twice-daily housekeeping keeps the rooms clean.

Standard Garden View Bungalows have only ceiling fans, but the rest of the units come with air-conditioning. They also come with safes, free Wi-Fi, and work desks, but no TV. Mini-fridges and tea-and coffee-making facilities are provided, and free bottled water is restocked daily. Beach towels, flip-flops, and umbrellas are also supplied.

Bathrooms could do with some updating, as toilets, sinks, and tiles all look old and the spaces are small compared to the rooms. All have walk-in showers with handheld showerheads. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided. All rooms have private balconies or terraces with seating; some have beach views.
