Bottom Line

This property was impacted byHurricane Irmain September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. If you’re lucky enough to have family in Tortola, you stay with them when you visit the British Virgin Islands. If you don’t have such luck, staying with Icis Malone and her family is the next best bet. Icis Villas was once the private home of Mrs. Malone’s father, which she has since transformed into a tiny mid-range hotel. The 15 rooms are spread across the several small buildings that dot the property. Decor throughout is a bit dated, but the apartment-style units are spacious and spotlessly clean. There’s a small pool surrounded by tropical gardens, and beautiful Brewers Bay is just across the street. Although the hotel doesn’t have a full-service restaurant, free continental breakfast is served daily, and guests can request additional meals for an extra charge. Plus, all rooms have fully equipped kitchens. Located on the northwestern side of Tortola, Icis Villas is a bit removed from tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops. Travelers looking for a hotel in a more touristy neighborhood might prefer Agape Cottages, a similar property in Cane Garden Bay.

Icis Villas

Scene

A quiet property with a homey atmosphere

Travelers looking for a home away from home when traveling to the BVIs should look no further than Icis Villas. The mid-range property has a homey feel, most likely because it was once the private residence of current owner Icis Malone’s father. The sprawling property has grassy lawns, tropical gardens, and a feeling of complete privacy, thanks to its lush, hilly surroundings. Icis and her family welcome guests like relatives, and go out of their way to make sure guests are comfortable and happy. Need a ride to he airport? No problem, Icis’ son will drive you. Lightbulb in your room not working? Icis’ husband will repair it. Craving a local delicacy? Icis will waste no time “fixing you up” some honey-stung chicken and Caribbean roti. The warm atmosphere here is a real highlight, and is what keeps guests coming back year after year. Besides vacationing families and couples, Icis Villas also hosts some long-term renters.

Location

Across the street from Brewers Bay, on the northwestern side of Tortola

If you have a hard time spotting Icis Villas from the main road, you’re not alone. The property sits tucked away behind a thick patch of trees, and only a small sign indicates its presence. A long driveway leads past a grand front lawn to the property’s main house, a large white structure with open-air breezeways. The land is completely surrounded by green hillsides, giving it a secluded, peaceful atmosphere.

Icis Villas is located across the street from Brewers Bay, one of Tortola’s most beautiful beaches. Brewers Bay is a crescent-shaped stretch of sand known for its quiet, family-friendly atmosphere. Unlike neighbor Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay doesn’t have any bars, restaurants, or loud music on the beach, and is usually overlooked by cruise ship passengers. Brewers Bay is better suited for travelers who prefer a relaxing, rather than rowdy, atmosphere. The only pitfall to this location is its isolation. The northwestern side of the island is far from the airport (40 minutes), Road Town (25 minutes), and most of the island’s shops and restaurants. Even getting to Cane Garden Bay, the next beach over, takes a good 15 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious apartments with full kitchens and dated decor

Room categories at Icis Villas include studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Decor varies a bit between rooms, but in general it’s dated and bland. But because rooms are spotlessly clean, and furniture is in tip-top shape, the decor doesn’t look as garishly ugly as one might expect, and contributes to a homey feel. Travelers unconcerned with room decor will find that the apartments at Icis Villas are spacious, impeccably kept, and hardly showing signs of wear and tear. Kitchens typically feature light wood cabinets, white appliances, and solid surface countertops. In some cases, kitchens have mini-fridges and two-top burners, but most apartments have full-size refrigerators and ovens. Kitchens are typically open to the living/dining area, which have cushioned wicker furniture and (mostly) tube TVs. Bedrooms have floral bedspreads and plenty of storage options. Bathrooms feature shower/tub combos and small pedestal sinks. All rooms have large outdoor balconies or patios.

Features

A small pool, free Wi-Fi and daily breakfast

There isn’t much to do at Icis Villas, but there is a small pool and free Wi-Fi. The narrow, rectangularly shaped pool has a small water feature and is surrounded by a few lounge chairs, and lush tropical gardens. It’s rarely crowded, so guests looking to take a dip will likely have the place to themselves.

Hotel freebies include Wi-Fi and daily continental breakfast. The Wi-Fi works well across the property, just make sure to ask Icis for the password. Daily breakfast includes toast, cereal, fruit, and coffee. It’s served each morning in the open-air communal dining room. Guests can also request additional meals for an extra fee. The hotel has a small menu of available entrees, appetizers, and desserts, but requests advanced notice to allow time for meal preparation.
