Bottom Line

Located a 10- to 15-minute drive from downtown attractions in Washington, D.C., this mid-range Hilton Garden Inn is mildly stylish and reasonably priced. Highlights include an indoor pool, free local shuttle, 24-hour fitness center, an on-site restaurant, and free parking (a rarity in the D.C. area). This hotel is a good option for tourists in this price range, and there’s also plenty to do in the immediate neighborhood. Those looking for a hotel right by the airport may want to compare rates with Hyatt Regency Crystal City, but note that its outdoor pool is seasonal.

Hilton Garden Inn Arlington/Shirlington

Scene

A bright and contemporary chain hotel just outside Washington, D.C.

Built in 2009, this Hilton Garden Inn doesn’t have much wow factor, but it does have all the basics for a comfortable stay. The most stylish part of the property is the lobby, which is airy and pleasant, with high ceilings, potted plants, a gas fireplace, and contemporary furniture in pastel shades of green and blue. Free cookies, water, and snacks are provided in the evenings. The rooms are unmemorable but there’s little to offend; they are clean, spacious, and all the standard amenities are there.

Next to the lobby is a restaurant and bar with lime green furniture and an outdoor patio area. Breakfast is available for a small fee, and it includes made-to-order omelets and a buffet. Aside from breakfast, the restaurant is only open in the evenings. The bar offers a daily happy hour featuring low-cost burgers.

A handful of One-Bedroom Suites are available with one king bed, a double sofa bed, and a bathroom with jetted tub and separate shower.

Features

This hotel has all the necessities -- pool, gym, restaurant, store, and business center.

This Hilton Garden Inn has a solid range of amenities. The first floor is home to a good-size fitness center, business center, and a convenience store with microwaveable dinners, wine, beer, and snacks (all open 24 hours). The lobby area also houses the Garden Grille & Bar, which is open for breakfast (buffet and limited a la carte options) and dinner. Other perks include free parking, room service (limited hours), a free 24-hour shuttle that runs within a two-mile radius (including to DCA airport and the Pentagon City Metro station), and free cookies, water, and snacks every evening. The hotel also has a hot tub and heated indoor pool, but it’s quite small and looks more like a lap pool. The Hyatt Regency Crystal City has an outdoor pool that's larger but it's only open seasonally.
