Bottom Line

The Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel is a 39-room historic hotel set in a Georgian house near the village of Lamphey in southwestern Wales. The decor of the hotel plays up the Georgian theme with its patterned carpeting, chandeliers, and floral wallpaper. There is only one attraction within walking distance, so guests will need a car to get to the beach or any nearby towns. Rooms look regal in navy and gold, but the double beds are just two twin beds pushed together and some past guests have complained of a musty smell. On-site features include a full-service spa with an infinity pool and two restaurants, though food receives mixed reviews. The Heywood Spa Hotel offers top-notch facilities at a comparable price.

Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel & Spa

Scene

Stunning Georgian country house with lush grounds

The Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel is a small historic property in a building that dates back to 1823. The cream-colored exterior reflects a typical Georgian country home, with symmetrical gridded windows and four huge Ionic columns extending from the stone entrance steps of the portico to the Grecian pediment on the roof. Shaped juniper trees line each wall. Inside, the Georgian theme continues with a patterned burgundy carpet, a mahogany wood front desk, and a towering antique grandfather clock. This classic design extends to the restaurants and rooms, where chandeliers, patterned carpet, and wallpaper are found throughout. This hotel is best for guests looking for a relaxing spa weekend in the Welsh countryside. Although there is a kids' treehouse on-site, young children would probably be bored with the hotel's old-fashioned decor and distant location from most attractions.

Location

Guests will need a car to leave the hotel grounds

The Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel is located near the tiny village of Lamphey in southwestern Wales. The only attraction within walking distance of the hotel is the Lamphey Bishop's Palace, the ruins of a getaway for bishops during the Medieval era; it's a two-minute walk away. The Lamphey train station is an 11-minute walk away. For all else, guests will need a car. The closest town is Pembroke, a five-minute drive away, which has a fantastic castle for visitors to tour. The stunning beaches of Freshwater East are an eight-minute drive away. A drive to Tenby -- which has more castles, beaches, and a replica of a 15th-century merchant's home -- takes 19 minutes. Free parking is available at the hotel.

Rooms

Classical rooms have flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi, but some smell musty

The Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel has 39 classically designed rooms, with twin, double, or king-size beds (though be forewarned that the double beds are just two twins pushed together). Most are decorated in shades of gold, beige, and navy, with mahogany-wood wardrobes and desks. Curtained windows provide views over the trees and fields of the unspoiled estate surrounding the hotel. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and trouser presses, as well as  coffee- and tea-making facilities and free shortbread cookies.

Bathrooms are simple and clean, and some rooms have marble countertops that make them look a little more elegant. All have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries, plus some also have bidets. Note that some past guests have complained of rooms smelling musty.

Two restaurants and a spa with an infinity pool and gym

The drawcard for the Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel is its full-service spa. Located in a separate building from the main house, it has an indoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a hair salon. Also available is a large gym with a variety of cardio and strength-training equipment and two flat-screen TVs. Outside, there are two floodlit tennis court and a kids' treehouse.

The hotel has two restaurants: the more formal Georgian Restaurant with a full bar, and a more casual Conservatory Restaurant, with wraparound windows that look out onto the estate grounds. Both have pleasant settings but the food receives mixed reviews.

Room service is available, as are wedding and conference spaces. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
