Bottom Line

A solid option for families and travelers who want a quiet getaway, the historic Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa has plenty of activities in a quiet and peaceful environment. This large resort is in a secluded mountain setting and many of the rooms have gorgeous alpine views. Despite its remote location, there's plenty to do both at the property and at nearby ski resorts. While the resort is particularly popular with golfers and skiers, guests who just want to relax indoors can take advantage of the Mountain View Grand's large spa, multiple lounge areas, library, and small movie theater. However, decor isn't as upscale as one may expect for rooms at this price.

Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa

Scene

Old-fashioned luxury (that's sometimes a bit dated) in a historic hotel

Remodeled in 2013, the large, welcoming lobby at the Mountain View Grand is filled with leather and wood, plush carpeting ,and warm, comfortable fixtures and furnishings, including a fireplace. The large wooden reception desk is a good place to get information about the day’s activities, menus, and specialty spa treatments. The entrances to the gift shop, the Tavern restaurant, and the fitness center are all close to the lobby. The look is elegant but it verges on being a bit dated, especially in the rooms. It is, however, a cozy spot for apres-ski.

Location

Secluded setting in the White Mountains

Located in the mountains on a private road just off of Route 302, this secluded resort is surrounded by acres of trails and forest land. The only view guests have is that of the mountains -- no other structures are visible from the property. While off-site restaurants and shops aren’t easily accessible, there are ski resorts very close by.

Rooms

Charming rooms with antique furniture; however, they can feel dated

As is often the case with historic hotels, almost every room at the Mountain View Grand is slightly different. Accommodations range from smaller, relatively basic rooms with slightly worn antique furnishings to larger suites with multiple rooms. Guests will find luxury bath amenities, small, simple bathrooms, and charming, old-fashioned decor (that's somewhat dated) that fits right in with the hotel’s historic ambiance. Dark wood and soft carpeting keep rooms warm and inviting. Many of the rooms and suites were remodeled in 2013, and more renovations are in progress to keep the property up-to-date. However, many rooms still have tube TVs.

Features

A wide range of on-site activities, events, and amenities

Guests have a huge variety of choices when it comes to recreation. The Mountain View Grand has its own spa, movie theater, game rooms, and pools, as well as a playground, a greenhouse, and a working farm. They also offer a number of specialized activities, such as axe throwing and mountaineering. There's a pro shop where guests can rent snowshoes, cross-country skis, golf equipment, and mountain bikes, as well as four restaurants and room service. A separate building houses a ballroom, and several meeting rooms are available for conferences and weddings.
