Bottom Line

This 27-room, no-frills Budget Inn is one of the most affordable places to stay in Williamsburg. A prime location within walking distance of the colonial area makes this motel an excellent value -- but don’t expect much more than a dated guestroom and (seasonal) outdoor pool.

Oyster Hotel Review

Budget Inn Williamsburg

Scene

Classic budget motel with an outdoor pool

Situated on a four-lane road just outside Colonial Williamsburg, this traditional budget motel consists of one-story brick buildings wrapped around a parking lot. At the center of the lot is a swimming pool surrounded by a chain-link fence. It’s far from beautiful, but with rates at half the price of the competition, it’s hard to complain. The management clearly makes an effort to spruce the place up with shrubbery, hanging plants, and small flowerbeds.

A tiny, fluorescent-lit reception office is loaded with tourist pamphlets, decorative plants, and American flags. A figurine of the Hindu elephant god, Ganesha, is perched on a ledge in the corner, and a faded sticker of another Hindu god greets guests as they walk in the door. (The accented staff members at the motel are, presumably, from India.)

Many guests remark on the cleanliness of the rooms, but we found the opposite to be true during our visit. We spotted bits of dirt on a bedside table, what looked like a plastic syringe cap in the bathroom floor, and cobwebs on the patios.

Rooms

Dated motel rooms with mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers

The rooms at Budget Inn have one king bed or two double beds, with a maximum capacity of five guests (rollaway beds are available). Highlights include basic coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Decor-wise, they are about as typical as budget motel rooms get -- patterned polyester bedding, generic flower paintings, bland wooden furniture, and plastic flowers. Old box TVs and worn furniture also add to the dated feel of the rooms.

Features

An outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and not much else

The best feature at this Budget Inn is its outdoor pool, which is decent-sized with an eight-foot deep-end (it was closed for the season during our visit). The motel also has an ice machine, vending machine, free Wi-Fi, and offers 10-percent discounts on breakfast at the pancake restaurant next door.
