Bottom Line

The 168-room Embassy Suites by Hilton Williamsburg is a sold three-pearl pick convenient to iconic sites and entertainment. While rooms and some common areas definitely feel like a chain hotel, wall-size murals reflect local flavor and the lobby is stylish. The restaurant serves good food -- including a free breakfast -- plus there are a heated indoor pool, 24-hour fitness room, business center, and mini-mart. Rooms are all suites, but smaller than is typical for the brand. Quality amenities include Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, and two flat-screens (one in separate living areas). Free extras include a cocktail hour with snacks, parking, and Wi-Fi. Travelers with kids should consider Kingsmill Resort; though it's farther outside the city, its three pools, waterslide, and kids’ club are attractive features.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Williamsburg

Scene

Contemporary design with a chain feel, but some local flair

Though the brick building of Embassy Suites is plain and surrounded by a parking lot, the trees, flowers, and open lawns help to create an appealing atmosphere. Inside, the lobby has a contemporary design with a large mural of the "Surrender of Lord Cornwallis" reflecting the colonial history of the town. A pair of bright red chairs in the sitting area pop against the neutral tones and light-blue accents of the space. Central hallways are open to an atrium which houses the first-floor restaurant. The hotel is popular with leisure travelers who appreciate the sufficient range of amenities in a convenient, quiet location.

Location

Quiet spot just off the main road through town; close to sites and entertainment

This hotel is on a quiet road, close to the main thoroughfare through the northern stretch of Williamsburg. Behind the hotel, a three-minute walk away, there’s a shopping center with a grocery store, bank, and a couple of small restaurants. It’s a four-minute walk to a mini-golf course. There’s also a large shopping area with many restaurants a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The public bus stops on the street just in front of the building for easy access to the town and sites.

The popular Colonial Williamsburg -- a historic village with exhibits and activities detailing colonial life -- is a seven-minute drive from the hotel. It is a 15-minute drive to Busch Gardens, a family-friendly amusement park with a variety of attractions. There’s a large golf club with multiple courses a 12-minute drive away. Richmond International Airport is a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Suites with two flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and coffeemakers

Rooms are fresh and clean, though a tad smaller than expected for an Embassy Suites. Uninspired, albeit contemporary, decor includes dark carpet, wood furniture, and plaid curtains. The accent walls feature maps of the area for a nice touch, but the overall look feels generic. All rooms are suites with separate living areas housing work desks, gray sofa beds, stylish teal armchairs, and wet bars. Other quality amenities include two 32-inch flat-screen TVs (one in each room), mini-fridges, coffeemakers, microwaves, and ironing facilities, but no safes. On the downside, some issues with room maintenance and cleanliness have been reported. Additionally, as some rooms allow smoking, cigarette smell can linger in hallways or non-smoking rooms. Bathrooms have a nice look with stylish wallpaper and most have shower/tub combos with curtains, though a few have walk-in showers. Hairdryers are provided and free toiletries include soap (both body and facial bars), shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.

Features

On-site restaurant with free breakfast, 24-hour fitness center, and a heated indoor pool

The hotel has all the basics typical of the Embassy Suites chain. The free breakfast is good and includes made-to-order items like omelets, or quicker grab-and-go fare. Lunch and dinner are also tasty, offering a range of typical American dishes. There’s a nightly reception with free drinks and snacks, appropriate for kids and adults alike. The 24-hour fitness center is a modern spot with a good range of cardio and weight-training equipment. A business center off the lobby has a few computers, a printer, and a copy machine. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

A popular extra here is the heated, indoor pool. It is small, but in a pleasant space with brick walls and lots of natural light. Outside, there is a terrace with loungers and a few trees for a nice spot to sunbathe or relax in warmer weather. Though the signage refers to a spa, there is nothing available beyond the pool.
