Bottom Line

The Bella Vista Suites is a mid-range hotel across the road from its own private pier on Lake Geneva. The prime location comes with a slightly upscale vibe and a beautiful outdoor terrace facing the lake, but the suites here aren't particularly modern. All have kitchenettes and private balconies though, with some adding perks like in-room whirlpool tubs or fireplaces. The hotel also has an indoor pool and hot tub, along with a full spa, but there's no restaurant, bar, or breakfast offered. For that, check next door at the historic Baker House, or the nearby Harbor Shores on Lake Geneva, which has slightly cheaper rates.

Bella Vista Suites

Scene

All-suite lakeside hotel with a casual Greek theme

Built in 1999, the Bella Vista Suites hotel has undergone several renovations over the years, adding contemporary updates to its classical (almost Greek-themed) decor. The entryway opens into a lobby with an arched ceiling painted with clouds, flanked by Greek columns around a small front desk. A few steps down is a four-story atrium, with a glass ceiling above a koi pond with a statuesque fountain in its center. The hotel is popular with vacationing couples, as well as business travelers.

Location

In a residential area of downtown Lake Geneva

The hotel is located at the edge of downtown in a mostly residential area, right across the road from the lake. Surrounding the lake are elegant century-old mansions and a 21-mile Geneva Lake Shore Path. Strollers beware: this is a full day’s hike. At the halfway point along the lake (about 15 minutes by car and two hours by foot) is Yerkes Observatory, which is home of the world’s largest refracting telescope. Most attractions are within a 10-minute walk, including the shops and restaurants of downtown, the Lake Geneva Cruise Line dock, and the Lake Geneva Public Beach. The Big Foot Beach State Park is a five-minute drive. Drive times to Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport are approximately 60 and 80 minutes, respectively.

Rooms

Large suites with kitchenettes and private balconies; some add fireplaces and whirlpool tubs

The hotel has 39 suites with either lake views or views over a parking lot facing a small park. They have a neutral decor with cream-colored carpets, light wood furniture, and fairly bland, dated fabrics. All suites have king-size beds, living rooms with sofa beds and work desks, and private furnished balconies or patios. Some have kitchenettes with microwaves, toasters, and coffeemakers, and others have full kitchens with dining tables, ovens, stovetops, and full-size refrigerators. Upgraded suites have perks such as gas fireplaces, second bathrooms, and/or in-room whirlpool tubs. Free Wi-Fi comes standard, along with iPod docks, and every suite as at least two flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have walk-in showers fitted with rainfall showerheads, and separate jetted tubs.
