Dean Court Hotel, BW Premier Collection

This hotel dates back to 1865, when it was constructed as three separate dwellings to house the clergy of York Minster. It's situated on the corner of Petergate, which was the main Roman road that ran through the city of York. A sign on the side showing a set of crossed keys represents the keys to heaven given to St. Peter and endorses the original buildings' link to York Minster. The building became a hotel after World War I and changed ownership several times through the years. Its brick exterior fits right in with the lovely historic neighborhood, and the Minster is right across the street. Inside, the lobby is modern, with a sleek curving front desk and contemporary light fixtures overhead. A pair of purple modern chairs provide seating for guests, and there's also a dining table next to reception. It's a warm, cozy little place suitable for all sorts of travelers, but most popular with couples. It's not unusual to spot a celebrity or two at the hotel, as it draws many TV, stage, and theater personalities. 

This hotel is located in York's city center overlooking the famed 14th-century York Minster cathedral. Many restaurants, shops, and attractions are within walking distance, including York Theatre Royal, York Castle Museum, and the National Railway Museum -- all of which are within 15 minutes on foot. One of Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms, famed for its afternoon tea, is only a three-minute walk from the hotel. The York Train Station can be reached in less than 10 minutes on foot, and Leeds Bradford Airport is about an hour away by car. 

Rooms are mostly contemporary and attractive, with clean-lined wood furniture, wallpapered accent walls, and classic patterned drapery. Color schemes vary and include gray, red, black, and tan. Some Family Rooms have separate bedrooms with bunk beds. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, DVD players (DVDs available in reception), mini-fridges stocked with water, electric kettles, and safes. Family rooms add PlayStation systems. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but fans are provided. Tiled bathrooms come with hairdryers, shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, towel warmers, and toiletries in large eco-friendly containers. Robes and slippers are provided. Front-facing rooms overlook York Minster and the memorial gardens, though keep in mind that traffic noise can be disruptive. Rear-facing rooms overlook adjoining businesses.

There are just a few features of note at this hotel, and most guests use it as a reliable base to explore the downtown area. The main restaurant serves seasonal fare in an elegant space with yellow and white tablecloths, black leather chairs, and wood flooring. Large windows show views of York Minster. For breakfast, guests can choose a traditional full English breakfast or continental option for a fee. The Court Cafe & Bar serves light fare and drinks in a casual space during the day. Although the hotel does not have on-site parking, valet service is available for parking off-site for a fee. A small desk in the lobby has a computer for guests to use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Two events spaces accommodate social and business gatherings.
