Hotel Croatia is a family-run, budget option in downtown Zagreb, with 18 bright rooms that feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Room decor is a tad generic, the lobby is on the dated side, and there are limited public spaces. There's a good free continental breakfast buffet, and the lobby bar and terrace is open all day, but there’s no other meal service. Located a four-minute walk from the Dr. F. Tudmana tram stop, and just out of walking distance from a number of attractions, the hotel offers good value compared to other nearby properties -- there's also reliable free Wi-Fi, and free secure parking. As an alternative, Hotel Dubrovnik is within easy walking distance of top attractions, and has an in-house American restaurant plus a cafe, but rates are a fair bit higher.
Scene
Small, family-run hotel with dated decor
Hotel Croatia is a small, family-run property that mostly attracts couples and families. It’s a solid option for a short stay, but limited public spaces mean longer-term travelers, or those looking to spend lots of time at the hotel itself, may wish to look elsewhere. The gray-and-glass-fronted building is every inch purpose-built, but in a fairly attractive way. Inside, the lobby is small and on the dated side, with a dark wood fronted reception desk, and white walls, ceilings, and tiled flooring. There’s limited tub seating, some old-fashioned framed prints, and fairly prominent crucifixes and Croatian flags that feel a tad out of place. The narrow lobby bar, just off the lobby itself, shares similar decor. The small raised streetside terrace is attractive, complete with artificial grass flooring. The cream-white breakfast room is on the traditional side with red pleather club chairs and small round marble tables.
Location
Close to the tram, and a walk or short ride to most attractions
The hotel is surrounded by residential and office buildings on a small but fairly busy street. Conveniently, local buses pass right by the front door, and the tram stop is close by. A number of attractions are within or just slightly beyond comfortable walking distance.
Rooms
Fairly forgettable rooms, all with safes, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs
The 18 fairly uniform, air-conditioned rooms are bright and spacious, though they are a tad bland and generic. Decor is on the traditional side, with white walls featuring small dated framed prints, and handsome dark-wood-paneled flooring. Beds have dark tan wood headboards with built-in bedside tables and old-fashioned wall lamps, and cream patterned linens. There are decent-sized, built-in dark-wood desks. Standard amenities include flat-screen cable TVs, phones, free Wi-Fi, safes, and mini-fridges.
Attractive modern bathrooms have cream and white floor and wall tiling, gray granite-effect built-in vanities with suspended sinks, and corner shower stalls with power showerheads. Wall-mounted hairdryers and dispensers of toiletries are provided. Large windows have cream curtains and pleasant views of neighboring homes. Some rooms also come with small, unfurnished balconies.
Features
Free continental breakfast, all-day lobby bar, and free parking and Wi-Fi
Hotel Croatia offers limited facilities, and has few public spaces to speak of, though all guests get a free continental buffet breakfast of cold meats, cheese, cereal, and yogurt. The lobby bar stays open from early morning until late evening, for hot and cold soft and alcoholic drinks, but there’s no other on-site food service. There’s 24/7 front desk service, limited free sheltered and secure private parking, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
