Bottom Line

One of the oldest properties in Laganas, the large Alexander Hotel is a budget property in a great central location -- a 10-minute walk from restaurants, bars, and clubs, and a five-minute drive from the beach. The 175 guest rooms include Doubles, Triples, and Family Rooms, all of which are very basic, with tile floors, simple wood furniture, and tube TVs. The hotel has two pools, one a more boisterous option near the snack bar, and the other a designated quiet pool; both have spacious sunbathing areas with loungers and umbrellas. The restaurant offers different dining packages, and serves both Greek and continental dishes. Rooms tend to feel worn and aren’t always thoroughly cleaned. As this property is popular with students and young groups on spring break or vacation, many public areas and guest rooms can be noisy.

Alexander Hotel

Scene

Poolside relaxation, with some youthful rowdiness

Expansive and open, the large lobby at the Alexander Hotel is a functional space. Luggage-toting guests relax in clusters of red and black couches and massage chairs, check in at the long brown front desk, and peruse postcards and souvenirs in the adjacent shop. The hotel restaurant and dining area -- an expansive room with dark wood tables and chairs, and white and yellow tablecloths -- is located off of the lobby, along with elevators and stairs to the guest rooms. A separate room has several computers and printers for guest use. Guests spend most of their time lounging at the two pools, with the younger (often rowdier) guests flocking to the poolside snack bar, a nondescript pinkish colored building with ceiling fans and several wood tables. The same crowd can be seen at the hotel bar -- with brown leather bar stools illuminated by blue lights -- set off to one side of the restaurant.

Location

Close to the heart of busy Laganas and the beach

Ideal for travelers wanting to explore the area, this property is located close to the action on the main road in Laganas. Guests are a 10- to 15-minute walk from Laganas Beach, and a 15-minute walk from Laganas' main strip, with restaurants, bars, and nightlife options. There are also some restaurants and grocery stores within close walking distance on the same street as the hotel. Laganas is known for its nightlife, and while guests of the Alexander Hotel have easy access to the nearby entertainment options and activities, the property is set far enough from the strip that the guest rooms aren’t too loud (except when the rowdier guests come through hallways). The main area of historic Zakynthos, which hugs the turquoise sea, is a 15-minute drive north.

Rooms

Simple rooms in various sizes; some with kitchenettes and balconies

This is a large, old property, so the rooms are on the smaller side and some can feel a bit worn. However, guests do have a number of room types to choose from -- the hotel offers Doubles, Triples, and family-style rooms with bunk beds. All are very plainly decorated with somewhat dated wood furniture, and fabric or paint in shades of orange, blue, or green. They also have tube TVs, safes, and air-conditioning (for a fee); some have mini-fridges, balconies, and kitchenettes. Guests note that some rooms are not well-maintained -- broken furniture or safes, perhaps due to the increasingly young, party-loving crowds.

{I can't confirm that all rooms have balconies; looks like they do, but I can't find this info on TA, and can't find a hotel website. Some guests on TA did not have mini-fridges. Also don't see anything about "Apartment" rooms? SA}

Features

An older property with two pools and an on-site restaurant

Since this hotel is one of the oldest properties on the island, it lacks some of the more modern conveniences of the newer hotels in the area. The great location is one of the best features, offering guests easy access to the beach as well as to the wide variety of nearby restaurants, shops, bars, and clubs. Transportation is easy with the local cabs and buses, and Zakynthos International Airport is a 10-minute drive away. The hotel includes two separate swimming pools, and there is a pool bar serving cocktails and snacks. The on-site restaurant serves average-tasting Greek and continental cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. An all-inclusive meals option is available (but optional -- which guests who aren't fans of the food will appreciate). There are fees for Wi-Fi and air-conditioning, but the hotel does offer an Internet room in the lobby with computer and printer access. Parking is free, and there is a large game room with several pool tables.
