Bottom Line

This Holiday Inn Express is a mid-range chain hotel near the Zurich Airport. The 163 rooms are bright and modern with basic amenities and free Wi-Fi, though there have been a few reports of poor housekeeping. Breakfast is free of charge, but on-site parking is typically expensive and there are no health facilities. Overall, it's a relatively cheap option with a free shuttle service to the airport, though those looking to explore Zurich city center should look at central properties like the upper-middle-range Hotel Continental Zurich, though rates are higher here.

Holiday Inn Express Zurich Airport

Scene

Simple airport hotel with relaxed ambience and ample outdoor space

Opened in 2009, theHoliday Inn Express Zurich Airport is housed in a simple, boxy building with a glass and wood-paneled facade. The interiors are modern and well-maintained, and the overall vibe is friendly and relaxed. Large windows mean there's plenty of natural light throughout the lobby, and there are a couple of outdoor patio areas with deck chairs. As one would expect from an airport hotel, most guests are transit passengers who need to be close to the airport in order to catch an early-morning flight. However, the hotel's five conference rooms -- each of which can fit up to 25 people -- make it a viable choice for meetings and events.

Location

On a busy road in the Rumlang district, with easy access to the Zurich Airport

The hotel is located in the Rumlang district on the busy Flughofstrasse, in an area dominated by office blocks and car dealerships. Although the airport is just next door to the hotel (it's actually visible from some guest rooms) getting there means about an eight-minute drive. (The hotel provides a free shuttle service every quarter of an hour.) The Rumlang railway station is about a five-minute walk away. Connections into city center run every half an hour; the trip takes around 15 minutes.

Rooms

Bright, simple rooms with flat-screen TVs with English-language channels

The hotel's 163 bright rooms are simply decorated in fresh, modern decor like wall-to-wall slate-colored carpeting, streamlined blonde-wood furniture, and abstract paintings reminiscent of a hazy red sunset. Standard in-room amenities include electric kettles, hairdryers, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels (including some English-language channels). Simple bathrooms have blue-tiled backsplashes, walk-in showers, and wall-mounted pump dispensers for toiletries. Despite its proximity to both the main road and the airport, soundproofing keeps external noise to a minimum. There have, however, been complaints of sub-standard housekeeping.

Features

There's a shuttle service that runs to the airport every 15 minutes, though it can fill up quickly at peak times. Guests with their own car can park in the hotel's garage, for a hefty fee. The Holiday Inn also features five conference rooms, each of which can accommodate up to 25 people. Free and reliable Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
