Bottom Line

The Sorell Hotel Zurichberg is an upscale property consisting of an original turn-of-the-century building and a super-modern annex rotunda, both set on a hillside overlooking Zurich. The location is peaceful and picturesque, while being just 10 minutes by car into the city or a five-minute walk from the nearest tram. The 66 rooms are sleek but simple, and most have superb views. The lack of a spa or fitness facilities on-site is a drawback, though the restaurant and bar are top-notch, and room rates are cheap by Zurich standards.

Sorell Hotel Zürichberg

Scene

Turn-of-the-century building with bold modernist reboot

Although appearing more like a modern take on a grand Alpine chalet, the Hotel Zurichberg in fact occupies an Art Deco-style building that dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Opened in 1900, it was classified a historic monument in 1990 and renovated and extended five years later by renowned Swiss architects Burkhalter and Sumi. The result is a mixture of bold, modern flourishes -- such as the  elegantly spiraling walkway in the rotunda annex -- and original fixtures such as carved wooden bannisters and floor-to-ceiling windows. The hotel is surrounded by lawns and sculpted shrubbery, creating a peaceful and rejuvenating countryside setting aided by Switzerland’s famous fresh mountain air.

Location

Perched on a forest hillside overlooking Zurich, a 10-minute drive away

The hotel is perched on a wooded hill overlooking Zurich to the west and the Alps beyond. The location is particularly quiet and away from the bustling streets of Zurich, though the city's Old Town (Altstadt) can be reach by road in just over 10 minutes. The Zurich Zoo and the FIFA HQ are just five minutes away on foot, and trams connect to the city's main train station in about 20 minutes. Zurich Airport is around a 15-20 minute drive, and the hotel runs an airport shuttle service that must be booked in advance.

Rooms

Designer-styled rooms with high-end amenities, most with superb views

The hotel's rooms are spread across the original building and a newer oval rotunda. Styled by some of Europe's top designers, rooms have a sleek but simple decor scheme with polished wooden floors and a minimalist white-and-red color palette. In-room amenities are similarly modern and include Bang & Olufsen TVs and Nespresso coffeemakers. Espace Rooms also have DVD players. Mosaic-tile bathrooms come with wall-mounted hairdryers, and those in Superior Rooms come with bathrobes and upgraded Chopard toiletries. Most rooms have lovely views over the city and Lake Zurich, and some units in the old building also have balconies.
