Bottom Line

This simple budget property is conveniently situated above a supermarket on a busy street lined with shops and dining options -- plus it's two blocks from Vondelpark and a 10-minute walk to the Museum Quarter. Common spaces are homey and include a dining room where free continental breakfast is served daily. Guest rooms are basic and have either shared or private en-suite bathrooms -- but these are tiny, dated, and lack toiletries. Amenities are limited to TVs (some are tube-style) and free (but slow) Wi-Fi, plus some rooms have balconies. Guests should note that smoking is permitted throughout the hotel and that there and steep staircases to navigate. For something more modern, Hotel Vossius Vondelpark has contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and tea/coffee facilities.

Scene

Budget property with simple homey interiors

Situated in a brown brick building, the ground floor of which is occupied by a supermarket, this modest budget hotel has surprisingly homey interiors. Fresh plants are lovely touches in the wooden-floored lobby that's furnished with simple round wooden table and chairs as well as black club-style seats. The space is bright with natural light thanks to glass doors that overlook a large interior courtyard shared by area buildings. There are a handful of common areas where guests can relax, including a smoking room as well as outdoor terraces. The breakfast room, which consists of several interconnected rooms, is also bright and sunny, furnished with wooden tables and chairs that, along with the white walls and wooden floors, make for a pleasant and inviting space. The smoker-friendly policy might not be suitable for all guests. Note that there is no elevator and staircases are steep.

Location

On a busy street near Vondelpark, well serviced by public transportation

The hotel is situated atop an Albert Heijn supermarket on a busy street lines with shops, restaurants, and bars. A tram runs along the street and stops a minute's walk from the hotel, plus there are more trams and buses running along the nearest intersecting road, giving easy access to the center and its sights. Dam Square is a 13-minute tram ride away, while the Anne Frank House is 15 minutes away by public transit, or a 22-minute walk. The Museum Quarter, home to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and the lovely Vondelpark is just two blocks away. The central train station is about 20 minutes away by public transportation. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is about a 20-minute train ride from the hotel.

Rooms

Simple, no-frills rooms with private or shared bathrooms; some rooms have furnished balconies

Rooms here are simple and fairly no-frills. They are clean and pleasant enough -- though there's not much in terms of decor beyond a couple of small framed prints on the walls. The hotel offers singles, doubles, triples, and quad rooms, and with options of either shared or private en-suite bathrooms. Peachy/beige walls are paired with navy carpeting, while furnishings include blond wood nightstands, beds topped with white linens, and tables with chairs (even single rooms have small blond wood tables and tub-style seats). A couple of hangers offer space for hanging clothes, though some rooms have wardrobes. Rooms with private bathrooms have in-room sinks as well as tiny bathrooms with toilets and showers; fixtures are old and could use an update. The hotel does not provide any toiletries. Amenities are limited to TVs -- though not all rooms have flat-screens; some have small tube-style sets -- and free Wi-Fi. TV remotes must be obtained from reception and require a deposit. Some rooms have furnished balconies. Note that smoking is permitted in this hotel and the cigarette smell lingers in rooms.

Features

Not much in terms of features beyond free continental breakfast

This small hotel doesn't offer much in terms of features, but a couple of extras add value to a stay here. Continental-style breakfast that includes fruit, ham, bread, cheese, and juice is included in rates and is served in a homey dining room. Hairdryers are available from reception, where guests will also find safes (use incurs a deposit). Guests can borrow board games. Luggage storage is available for free. Wi-Fi is free, but past guests have noted slow connections.
