Bottom Line

The 34-room Quentin Arrive Hotel is a budget property located at the top of Canal Ring, a seven-minute walk to Amsterdam's central station and a 12-minute walk to Dam Square. Rooms, some of which have private baths, balconies, and rainfall showers, include wall-mounted TVs and free Wi-Fi,  but they're not air-conditioned, and guests have complained about noise and spotty Wi-Fi. Budget Double and Triple Rooms share bathrooms. The lobby lounge, with its large windows, dangling chandeliers, and leather chesterfield sofas, conveys a faded grandeur. Travelers might want to also consider the Budget Hotel Tourist Inn, although it has more of a hostel atmosphere.

Scene

Budget property with charming lobby

The Quentin Arrive Hotel is housed in a cream-colored, four-story corner 19-century building. It's a good choice for guests who want budget prices but private bathrooms, although several rooms do share baths. The hotel lobby, with its wood floor, white walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light, evoke faded grandeur. Cafe tables, which serve as a breakfast area in the morning, line up against one window wall, while in another corner worn, leather chesterfield sofas are grouped around a wood coffee table on a traditional Persian-style rug. The room features a playful wallpapered accent wall, tiered chandelier lighting, and a reception desk finished with a bold floral design. During our visit, in the summer of 2016, the hotel was installing an elevator. Close to the train station and within easy reach of Amsterdam sights, the hotel is popular among budget-conscious tourists, including  couples and groups of friends traveling together.

Location

In charming area at top of Canal Ring, a seven-minute walk to Amsterdam's central station

Quentin Arrive Hotel is situated at the top of Canal Ring on Haarlemmerstraat, a charming and popular street filled with traditional Dutch houses, independent shops, and cafes. The street gets a relative amount of slow-moving traffic during the day, especially bike and foot traffic, and some of the nearby bars can get noisy at night. Amsterdam's central train station, a major hub for both local and long-distance travel, is a seven-minute walk from the hotel. The quaint Jordaan neighborhood is also nearby -- about a five-minute walk away -- while Dam Square and the Anne Frank House are a 12-minute walk. The Royal Palace, the Red Light District, and the Flower Market are about a 20-minute walk, while Vondelpark and the Van Gogh Museum are about 20 minutes away via public transportation. Schiphol Airport is about 25 minutes away via public transportation, or a 20-minute drive.

Rooms

Rooms can sleep up to four; several have private baths

The Quentin Arrive Hotel's 34 rooms come in doubles and triples, and they feature wood floors, white walls, and white bedding. Standard Rooms (twins, doubles, or triples) have private baths with rainfall showers, and may have peach accent walls, modern tufted headboards, reading lights, Juliet balconies, and artwork hanging over the beds. Budget Double and Triple Rooms share baths, include in-room sinks, and can be cramped. Rooms have flat-screen TVs (some are square-shaped models), work desks and free Wi-Fi, though some guests complain about a slow signal. Rooms are not air-conditioned, and lack safes, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Showers have body-wash dispensers and hairdryers; irons, and ironing boards are available on request. Some rooms have nice views of Haarlemmerstraat, but basement rooms are dark with tiny windows. Guests have complained about noise, both from within the hotel and from the outside -- and note that some nearby bars stay open late.

Features

Pleasant lobby lounge, 24-hour front desk, and continental breakfast (extra fee)

The lobby is the main common space -- it offers lounge areas by floor-to-ceiling windows that provide great views of the bustling street outside. The hotel serves a continental breakfast, but it isn't included in all room rates. There's no bar, but soft drinks and coffee can be purchased at reception, along with a few souvenirs. Reception is open 24-hours, and the hotel will store luggage and rent bikes. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
