Bottom Line

This modern budget property is located on a quiet street in the historical neighborhood of Plaka, within a five-minute walk of Syntagma Square and a 15-minute walk of the Acropolis. The highlight here is a gorgeous shaded rooftop with views of the Acropolis, where a free continental breakfast is served. Clean rooms have furnished balconies, flat-screen TVs, and a variety of color schemes from brown to pink; just note that bathrooms are small, walls are a bit thin, and some rooms face an interior courtyard. Wi-Fi is free. This is a good value given the terrific location, though it may be worth comparing rates with the nearby Best Western Amazon Hotel.

Adonis Hotel

Scene

Small budget hotel with terrific Acropolis views from rooftop

The Adonis Hotel is situated in historic Plaka, a touristy neighborhood known for its souvenir shops, historic buildings, and narrow streets. It's a popular pick for backpackers or families looking for an affordable, no-frills place to stay in Athens in the heart of the action. The exterior of the property is unobtrusive white stucco, with flags on the balcony and a couple of potted plants on either side of the entrance. The street itself is cobblestone and quiet. Inside, the property is relaxed and unpretentious. There is a short stairway just to reach the lobby level, so even though the property does have an elevator it may not be suited to those with specific accessibility requirements. The lobby is charming and bright with brown leather couches, light wood floors, and a flat-screen TV. The rooftop is a highlight, with a show-stopping view of the Acropolis.

Location

A five-minute walk away from the Syntagma Square subway station, in the Plaka neighborhood

Hotel Adonis is in the popular Plaka neighborhood, a five-minute walk from Syntagma Square (also known as Constitution Square, and a popular hub for protests) and the Greek Parliament. It’s within a 15-minute walk of the Acropolis, Athen's most famous attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Plaka district is about as convenient a home base as it gets, and is home to cobblestone streets (including the one the hotel sits on), souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, and charm to spare.

Rooms

Cheerful, functional, and pleasant rooms -- with large balconies

The Adonis is a budget hotel with few frills. Rooms are furnished with lots of white tile, simple light or white wood furniture, and accent walls and bed runners that add a pop of color and style (the rooms we saw had highlights in bright pink or brown). Some rooms have views of brick walls while those on the fourth and fifth floors offer good views of the Acropolis. It’s an uncomplicated and cozy place to stay, although the beds can be narrow and rather hard. Each room has air-conditioning, a telephone, a flat-screen TV, and a furnished balcony. Bathrooms are en-suite and are simple, clean, and unpretentious -- but tight on space. Walls are thin so noise does carry.

Features

Roof garden with Acropolis views, a computer station, and free Wi-Fi

As a budget hotel, the Adonis doesn't offer much in the way of amenities. Its convenient location and value rooms are the biggest draws for many guests. That said, the hotel’s rooftop, where the free continental breakfast is served in the morning, has a striking view of the Acropolis. The pretty rooftop has potted plants and an awning that provides shade from the strong Greek sun. The rooftop turns into a bar/lounge at night, where Ouzo is frequently sipped. There are a computer and printer, useful for printing boarding passes, and Wi-Fi is free.
