Bottom Line

The 38-room Areos Hotel is a popular, affordable mid-range hotel in Athens. Located near Areos Park and the Victoria Metro Station, this boutique has attractive, modern rooms with hardwood floors and mini-fridges (some have furnished balconies and rooftop views). There is a breakfast buffet with standard fare and an on-site cafe for coffee and drinks. There have been some complaints that the neighborhood can feel sketchy after dark. It may be worth comparing rates at the nearby Radisson Blu Park Hotel, which is closer to the Victoria Metro Station and has a rooftop pool.

Areos Hotel

Scene

Urban and contemporary boutique

From the outside, the Areos Hotel has a grittier facade than what guests will find in the contemporary and youthfully styled lobby. An oversize green and black street map of the neighborhood hangs behind the reception desk and a black and crystal chandelier brightens up the space. Furnishings include dark leather sofas with curved backs in front of a square coffee table decorated with bold words such as health and love. Greek photography books add a nice touch. Di.eL Cafe bar has a fun and funky vibe with chalkboard signs and bright red walls.

Location

On a gritty street across from Areos Park

The Areos Hotel is located outside of the heart of Athens. While the neighborhood is by no means dangerous, the park and abandoned building across the street can make even the most street smart guest cautious at night. The Victoria Metro Station is about seven blocks from the hotel, and there's a bus stop near the entrance. The National Archaeological Museum is only two blocks away. Restaurants, banks, shops, and bars are all within walking distance though the neighborhood is geared more towards residents than tourists. It's about 20-minutes to the Acropolis via bus.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms with rooftop views

There are 38 rooms and suites at Aeros Hotel and each of them are a little different -- some have a large furnished balcony with cool views over the rooftops of Athens and others have a small kitchen with a cooking range and mini-fridge (though no pots or dishes). Each room has hardwood floors and an electric kettle, plus a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. Some of the bathrooms have full size bottles of Dove products while others have travel size generic toiletries. Some bathrooms have a whirlpool style tub. Some guests have complained about lingering cigarette odors.

Features

Breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, and a coffee bar

Breakfast is served either in the coffee bar off the lobby or directly to guests' rooms, which is a fun perk -- though it's not free. The coffee bar is a quiet spot for afternoon espressos or cocktails and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. For a rooftop swimming pool, free breakfast, and a small fitness center check out rates at the nearby Radisson Blue Park Hotel.
