Bottom Line

This budget hotel offers 36 very basic, dorm-style rooms that receive mixed reviews from guests; many are happy with the accommodations, though a number have complained of maintenance issues like water leaks, grungy carpets, and blasting heat. The majority of guests comment that, for the money, this is a very good value as long as one’s expectations are fairly low. Another major advantage of this property besides the price is its proximity to a bus line that services the airport directly -- and runs frequently, including late at night and early in the morning -- in about 30 minutes. The neighborhood, which is situated to the southeast of Pest, is nondescript but has a nearby supermarket and some basic eateries.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Chesscom

Scene

Somewhat clinical vibe; geared to budget travelers and those with early morning flights to the airport

The hotel tends to attracts passers-through as well as a younger, backpacking bunch who don’t mind the basic accommodations. Set on a suburban street in a five-story structure that was probably once an apartment building, the hotel has a mildly clinical feeling inside, with tiled hallways that can be somewhat dim. The casual front entryway has slightly dilapidated couches in front of a small check-in counter. The restaurant, too, has tiled floors, along with wood paneling and simple, wood tables and chairs with pinkish cushions and yellow checkerboard tablecloths. An eclectic mix of traditional Hungarian wall art, gold-colored vases, and busy sconces lend a vaguely homey feel to the restaurant, and there's a small brick bar with black tiling and a wood border with cutouts of sea life.

Location

In a working-class southeast suburb of Pest, about a 40-minute bus ride from the heart of downtown

Situated in a suburban area, across the street from an unpaved lot and a graffiti-covered building, the property is not set in a particularly upscale neighborhood, though there have been no recent complaints about safety. The airport is a half-hour direct bus ride on a line that leaves a few hundred feet from the front door, or the hotel can arrange a transfer for a reasonable fee; downtown Pest is slightly further away (40 minutes), and accessible via the last stop on the M3 subway line, which is a few blocks away at the Kőbánya-Kispest stop. Just a few minutes' walk away is Köki Terminál, a mall with many shops, as well as a cafe, coffee shop, pizza restaurant, and Tesco supermarket.

Rooms

Wall-to-wall carpeting, shared bathrooms in some, laminate wood wall panels

These very basic rooms tend to get OK reviews for bed quality; they are quite plain, with little attempt at decor. Rooms have cobalt-blue curtains, peachy wall paint, Tiffany-style hanging lamps, wall-to-wall green carpeting that may be showing wear and tear, and blonde wood laminate wall paneling throughout. Each room has a mini-fridge, a small tube-style or flat-screen TV, tiny bedside lamps, a safe, and air-conditioning. Bathrooms are tiled in white, and have hairdryers and either a stall shower or shower/tub combo; some are private, and some are shared. Walls are on the thin side, and guests have noted that noise from the street and from neighboring rooms is audible.
