Bottom Line

The Yosemite Southgate Hotel & Suites is a mid-range hotel conveniently close to Yosemite National Park’s south entrance and a few local dining options. The hotel itself has no restaurant or bar, but free continental breakfast is included in rates, along with coffee available around the clock. Its rooms are some of the largest around, with wet bars and modern amenities like 46-inch flat-screen TVs, but also some dated elements that are starting to look like museum pieces. Perks include a steam room and sauna, along with a seasonal outdoor pool. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby BEST WESTERN PLUS Yosemite Gateway Inn, which has its own restaurant.

Yosemite Southgate Hotel & Suites

Scene

Mid-range hotel with a contemporary makeover

A renovation updated the aging Yosemite Southgate Hotel & Suites, breathing new life into its breakfast room, where coffee and juice machines have been rebranded as a "24-hour coffee bar" opposite stool seating amid plentiful outlets. The lobby has a more contemporary look too, decorative birch limbs backing the front desk the only reminder of the mountainous wilderness in a space that could otherwise be anywhere. Brown couches and teal throws are arranged around a faux glass fireplace, set in a gray accent wall. Despite its modest size, the building has an elevator, and interior-entry corridors (as opposed to motel-style exterior doors), which is rare among hotels in the area.

Location

On Highway 41, close to Yosemite National Park’s south entrance

Located on the north side of the town of Oakhurst, the hotel is in a quieter area despite being right off of Highway 41. It shares a parking lot with a Denny's, and is within a 10-minute walk of several other fast-food chains, as well as a few local restaurants and a strip mall. It's about a 30-minute drive to the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Expect about a two-hour drive to the northwest into Modesto, with Sacramento and San Francisco and three hours and three-and-a-half hours away respectively.

Rooms

Large rooms with wet bars, microwaves, and 46-inch flat-screens

The hotel's 80 carpeted rooms have a mix of dated furnishings and more contemporary decor from the most recent update. Wood tables, desks and headboards have a pinewood veneer, set in a mostly cream and brown palette. The rooms have either California king-size beds and sofa beds, or two queens, along with sitting areas that have a table and two upholstered armchairs. Wet bars are accompanied by coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and old microwaves. Some rooms also have old corded wall phones and radio alarm clocks from another era. However, modern 46-inch flat-screens come standard as does free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms have average shower/tub combos, with big separate vanities outside.

Features

Outdoor pool and hot tub, sauna, steam room, fitness corner, 24-hour business center, and free breakfast

The outdoor hot tub and pool are set in a small sundeck adjacent to the parking lot, open seasonally. Inside, there's a sauna and steam room, as well as a tiny fitness area, essentially crammed into the corner of a hallway near an entrance, with just one weight trainer and stepper. Free continental breakfast is served in a breakfast room that's open 24/7 and has free coffee. There's also a 24-hour business center with a pair of computers and a printer. Free parking is available, with space for buses and RVs.
