Bottom Line

The Holiday Inn Chiang Mai might look slightly worn compared to some of the competitors in town, not to mention being on the opposite side of the Ping River from downtown and the tourist attractions, but it does have the largest rooms in all Chiang Mai, as well as excellent views out toward the mountains. The large hotel, with over 500 rooms, is popular amongst tour groups, offers good value for the money, and gives guests plenty of space to sprawl out. While there is no spa and the swimming pool if far too small for the number of guests, there is a fitness center, a Chinese restaurant, and an international buffet at the River Terrace.

Holiday Inn Chiang Mai

Scene

Plenty of tour groups, families, and value seekers

The Holiday Inn is a pretty bustling and noisy place. As the lobby contains the reception area, concierge, tour services, a restaurant, and bar, it is constantly packed with tour group arrivals and families who take advantage of the large rooms at some of the best prices in town. With this budget-conscious crowd, areas like the small pool can feel pretty overcrowded and noisy, and there certainly isn't any kind of expected dress code in this establishment. In spite of this, the lobby bar and lobby area are quite stylish, and the bar gets its fair share of holiday-making couples, business travelers, and IHG member guests, as it is a pretty relaxing and snazzy enough spot to have a few drinks.

Location

Across the river, away from downtown in a local non-touristed neighborhood

The Holiday Inn Chiang Mai is located well away from the crowds and tourist bustle of downtown Chiang Mai. It is set across the Mae Ping River from the center and located in a very local Thai neighborhood which contains plenty of mom and pop shops, an outdoor market, and lots of small traditional Thai eateries. While there is no sightseeing and little to do at night here, it's only a 10-minute drive to the city center and the hotel does have a free shuttle to the Night Bazaar.

Rooms

The largest rooms in Chiang Mai

The rooms at the Holiday Inn are average and a bit worn in terms of decor, but their sizes impresses. These are the largest guest rooms one will find in town, with even the smallest Superior Rooms starting at 45 square meters (suites run up to 85 square meters). All rooms come with 32-inch LCD TVs, coffeemakers, large beds, closet space, and free Wi-Fi. It's not just the rooms that are huge, but the bathrooms too, and they offer showers, separate bathtubs, and lots of mirror and countertop space. (Some of the tile grout could have used a bit of a scrub, though.) Rooms have large glass windows with excellent views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding mountains.

Features

Small overcrowded swimming pool and no spa, but a decent fitness center and in-house restaurants

While the guest rooms here are huge, the swimming pool is far too small for the number of rooms and hotel guests, and thus is overcrowded most of the time. The hotel does have a decent fitness center, but no spa. There are some good eating and drinking options, including a Chinese restaurant, international buffet, and stylish lobby bar.
