Bottom Line

The 12-room Hostal Poblado Park is a two-pearl hostel in a convenient El Poblado location, close to restaurants, bars, and the subway. Fan-cooled dorms and private rooms are clean and functional, but they're sparsely furnished and decor is unremarkable. The cheapest rooms lack windows, bathrooms are tiny, and some rooms pick up noise from parties downstairs. Simple interiors elsewhere in the property are spiced up by colorful wall murals and mismatched vintage-style wooden furniture, and there’s a sociable vibe and regular events. There’s an attractive walled garden complete with a bar, hammocks, and a ping-pong table, as well as a fully equipped communal kitchen -- but no breakfast or other meals are available. Travelers might compare rates with the Hostal Lleras Calle 8, where some rooms have air-conditioning.

Guest House Poblado

Scene

Simple, but homey, decor perked up with funky, colorful murals

The Poblado Park is a sociable party hostel targeted at budget-conscious travelers. Set in an adapted townhouse, the lobby has a warm, casual, and homey atmosphere. Wall murals by Bogota-based artists and handsomely mismatched wooden furniture add a funky vibe both here and elsewhere throughout the hostel. There are orange, white, and blue walls, terra-cotta floor tiling, and rather cheap, worn-looking black faux-leather sofas, along with a simple green-painted wooden front desk. In addition to the colorful murals, otherwise simple hallways and stairwells have white walls and doors, and handsome wooden steps. But among the highlights is the lovely walled back yard, featuring hammocks strung between tall trees and shrubs, and seats fashioned from old car tires. Most of the guests here are young travelers, who want to meet and mingle.

Rooms

Clean and functional fan-cooled dorms and private rooms with tiny bathrooms

Clean and functional fan-cooled dorms and private rooms at the Hostal Poblado Park offer a good value, though some furniture is showing its age and is a little worn. Four-bed dorms are simple, with handsome dark-wood panel flooring, two-story pinewood bunks, and plain white walls, plus large windows with simple white blinds, and individual lockable cupboards -- but there’s little else in these rooms.

Private rooms have similarly plain decor, featuring off-white floor tiling, handsome dark-wood bed frames and headboards, and freestanding dark-wood bedside tables with simple lamps. Attractive dark-wood-paneled vaulted ceilings perk things up a little here, and there are wall-mounted shelves and clothes hanging spaces. However, apart from small art canvases, these rooms are sparsely furnished. Note that cheaper rooms lack windows, and that some pricier rooms -- with  windows and old-fashioned blue curtains, but little in the way of views -- come with cheaper metal-framed beds and brown motel-style comforters, plus small, cheap black-wood desks.

Amenities include a mix of wall-mounted and floor fans -- there's no air-conditioning here -- but that’s about it. Perhaps unsurprisingly at this price point, there are no TVs, safes, mini-fridges, coffee- and tea-making facilities, hairdryers, or toiletries, including in private rooms. Note that some rooms pick up noise from parties in the hostel garden below.

In both dorms and private rooms, tiny all-white bathrooms have dated glass countertop sinks on built-in cream vanities, and basic shower stalls with fixed showerheads.

Features

Well-equipped kitchen, lovely garden, sociable vibe with regular events, and free Wi-Fi

There’s no breakfast or other meal service here, but facilities include an extensively equipped communal kitchen and dining room, plus a simple but attractive game room with a table for board games, and a computer terminal for guests to use. There’s also a pleasant upstairs terrace with functional, but colorful, tables and chairs, and nice views of neighboring buildings. However, the hostel’s highlight is its lovely walled garden, complete with hammocks, tire seating, and a ping-pong table. The low-key, sheltered outdoor bar has a fun atmosphere in the evenings. The hostel also puts on regular rumba and salsa dance classes, barbecues, and poker nights. There’s free Wi-Fi throughout.
