In pricey Copenhagen, the budget Hotel Astoria is a solid option, with a central location next to the main railway station and within walking distance of several attractions. Just under half of the hotel's 93 rooms have been recently renovated, and the difference is reflected in the rates, but all have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Note that economy rooms are a tight fit for two, and complaints have been made about the cleanliness and smell of rooms and hallway carpeting. Though the rooms are rather basic, the hotel does serve a tasty all-organic breakfast (included in some room rates) and has a free wine hour every evening. Copenhagen Star Hotel, just behind the railway station, is a smart alternative with similar features, plus a quiet courtyard.
Scene
Bright, welcoming property in a heritage building right next to Copenhagen Central Station
Inside a 1934 heritage building, Hotel Astoria is designed to look like a steam locomotive. Although upgrades have been made, the original stairs, elevators, and doors to some rooms remain. Also original are the hotel's revolving doors, believed to be the first in Denmark; they add a little slice of pizazz to the otherwise budget property and lead to the bright lobby, lined in windows. At one end is the lounge, where a black leather couch and rough-hewn wooden table make for a lounging spots, and where free tea and coffee are up for grabs. At the other end of the lobby is the bar, where free wine is served nightly. Both lobby-lounge and bar are simply furnished, but as some of the guest rooms are rather small, these provide cheerful public spaces in which to spread out. That this budget hotel is right next to the main train station makes it popular with travelers seeking a good value in expensive Copenhagen and easy access to railway lines. Milling around at breakfast are groups of friends, couples, and families visiting the local amusement park Tivoli Gardens, just on the other side of the station.
Location
Next to Copenhagen Central Station and within walking distance of many tourist attractions
This budget hotel is super central. Although the area right outside the hotel is a bit sleepy, a three-minute walk to the main shopping street Vesterbrogade brings you to cafes, restaurants, and bars. Stately Copenhagen Central Station, the city's main railway station, is right next to the hotel, and trains from here run along Denmark and to southern Sweden. Central Station is not connected to Copenhagen Metro (that's coming in 2018), but many bus lines stop there, and immediately surrounding the hotel are four other bus stops. The hotel is within walking distance of most of Copenhagen's major sites.
Rooms
Comfortable, simple rooms in a range of sizes with flat-screen TVs and blackout curtains
Guest rooms, more basic than the common spaces, are outfitted with wooden beds and wardrobes; white, black, and gray checkerboard carpeting; and small black writing desks. On the beds are starched white sheets and dove-gray duvets. The only thing hanging on the walls are flat-screen TVs. The rooms are a bit bland, but not uncomfortable, though the 40 renovated rooms feel much cleaner than those that are not. The in-room amenities are simple: free Wi-Fi, blackout shades, and a small standing fan; there is no air-conditioning. The junior suites have wooden balconies that overlook Reventlowsgade and its handsome 19th-century buildings. The hotel's bathrooms are done up in imitation marble; some rooms have showers only, while others have a shower-tub combination. There are hairdryers and, a nice surprise for a budget hotel, luxe REN toiletries. Like some of the smaller rooms, the bathrooms are a bit tight for two but one person is unlikely to feel cramped. Note that there have been some complaints that the unrenovated rooms are dirty and worn, and that with the windows open street-facing rooms can be noisy.
Features
Lobby lounge, bar, breakfast service, and bike rentals
Hotel Astoria is a relatively basic hotel with few facilities, but it does have a bar where guests mingle during happy hour. The hotel offers an all-organic breakfast buffet, included in some room rates, with good vegetarian options. The lobby-lounge is bright and has couch and table seating, and free coffee, tea, and water on offer. Biking is the most common way to get around Copenhagen, and bikes can be rented at reception, where maps are also available. Hotel Astoria has no business center, but the front desk will do small print jobs, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
