Built in 1839, the upscale 114-room Tremont Hotel, offering sophisticated (if a tad tired) common areas, is centrally located in the Strand Historic District. It includes a casual on-site cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a spacious rooftop bar for cocktails. Rooms are open and bright, with modern amenities and traditional furnishings, and a number of ballrooms and meeting rooms are available for functions and events. The hotel offers a free shuttle around the island as well as to its sister property, the Hotel Galvez, which includes a spa and is close to the beach. While Tremont House has beautiful historic architecture and high ceilings, it can be noisy and appear worn in areas.
Scene
Open and bright historical building
Decorated in stark shades of black and white, the large lobby is spacious and contemporary, with several seating areas and tables and chairs for dining, and The Tremont Cafe takes center stage. The small front desk is located right near the main entrance, and plants and oil paintings add warmth and comfort to the formal ambience. The room is well lit by an opaque overhead window, which provides plenty of natural light. The cafe in the lobby is separated from the other seating areas by brick walls, and offers additional seating. A piano is tucked into one corner, and arched hallways and an elevator lead to the guest rooms.
Location
Centrally located in the Strand Historic District
Surrounded by restaurants, shops, and activities, The Tremont House is ideally located for exploring Galveston’s historic district. Those who enjoy walking will find a number of attractions close to the hotel, including the Texas Seaport Museum, the cruise ship terminal, The Grand 1894 Opera House, Island ETC Theater, and Galveston Bay, as well as a wide variety of dining and shopping options. The beach, the Moody Gardens golf course, and outlet shopping are within a 15-minute drive. The hotel also offers a free shuttle around the island. The area is walkable, safe, and scenic, but the proximity to the street and nearby attractions means some rooms can be noisy.
Rooms
Clean and sophisticated, with historic touches
The rooms and suites at The Tremont House are stylish and clean, with traditional fixtures, large windows, and hardwood floors. Rooms are decorated in shades of black and white, with traditional wallpaper and patterned curtains. All rooms include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, coffeemakers, and safes. Single Standard rooms are small but well laid-out, while Double Standards are more spacious. Clean Air Rooms are available for guests with allergies. Queen or King Suites, which include pull-out sofa beds, separate sitting and dining areas, and vaulted ceilings, are also available.
Features
A historic property with modern conveniences
Although The Tremont House is an older property with plenty of history, it has been remodeled several times over the years. The large lobby includes a number of seating areas, along with The Tremont Cafe, which serves three meals a day, and cocktails. There's also a popular rooftop bar. Several ballrooms and meeting rooms are available for special events and functions, and a business center includes several computers and printers. There's a small fitness center but no pool. Guests can take the free shuttle to the hotel’s sister property, the Hotel Galvez, to use its spa. The free shuttle also brings guests around the island to major sights and attractions. Valet parking is available for a fee.
