Hamburg’s port is one of the busiest in the world. Here’s where to stay in the bustling heart of the city.
The upscale Madison is a block away from the Elbe River, within a two-minute walk of the port promenade and the piers. The historic Speicherstadt warehouse district and downtown Hamburg, plus Neuer Wall, Monckebergstrasse, the fish market, and Landungsbrucken are all within easy walking distance. Breakfast can be a bit pricey here, but there are plenty of nearby cafes for more affordable dining, and rooms come in a variety of prices, ranging from Studios, which are still spacious and super-modern, to Penthouses that resemble massive apartments.
This high-end business-oriented hotel has a prime waterfront location in the Speicherstadt district in the center of Hamburg. There are numerous bars, eateries, and shops within a short stroll, with the Reeperbahn nightlife district around 10 minutes' walk. Tourist attractions such as Rathaus city hall and the start of the Inner Alster Lake are within walking distance. The hotel's 233 rooms and suites are bright and spacious, around half with river views, and upgraded amenities include espresso machines and whirlpool tubs. Breakfast is excellent (though pricey, like Madison's) and an outdoor fitness terrace is a nice touch, though the lack of a pool feels like a shortcoming at this level, especially considering that Madison offers guests free morning access to the Meridian Spa's pool and sauna.
