West London's family-run Amsterdam Hotel has 27 light and modern rooms and apartments -- some are cramped while the more expensive options have more room. There
aren't a great deal of facilities here, but the hotel does offer a free breakfast --
although the variety could be better. The location is great for those visiting
the nearby Earls Court Exhibition Centre, and it’s within walking distance from Earl's
Court underground station, too. While the Amsterdam is not a luxury hotel, it is a clean,
comfortable option for budget travelers wanting to be in a convenient West London location.
Scene
Bright and modern Victorian house attracting tourists and business travelers
Set in a charming four-story Victorian house, the hotel has an
attractive exterior featuring decorative wrought-iron balconies and grand pillars
outside the entrance. Sleek glass doors lead into a bright lobby with a
small reception desk and a seating area. There's a curved staircase with a modern
striped carpet and contemporary artwork hangs on the walls. Down the hall is a small
elevator and a door that leads out to a paved garden with plenty of seating. The space is bright
and welcoming, and there's a selection of brochures on local attractions on display. Guests are a mix of tourists and business travelers needing easy access to the nearby Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
Location
Short walk to shops, restaurants, museums, and a tube station
The Amsterdam Hotel sits across the street from Earl's Court tube station, from where guests can reach Heathrow Airport in just over half an hour. The huge
Earl's Court Exhibition Center is less than a 10-minute walk away, where a
range of conferences, concerts, and exhibitions are held. Some of the world's
best museums are within a 15-minute walk away, including the Victoria and Albert
Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum. The trendy shops of
High Street Kensington are within a 10-minute walk, as is a multiplex cinema.
It’s a five-minute walk to two large grocery stores, and there are a great
range of restaurants and bars within a short stroll from the hotel -- from large
pizza chains to artsy, bohemian cafes, and an excellent Thai restaurant.
Rooms
Airy and modern, but some bathrooms are worn
The rooms are light and bright, with a neutral and modern decor and
wood flooring. Room sizes vary, some are cramped with the door right next to the bed, and others have more room. All have
flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, safes, air-conditioning, free newspapers, and desks, and some rooms have balconies. Bathrooms are
simple and clean, but some show small signs of
wear and tear, such as chipped toothbrush holders. The hotel also offers well-equipped apartments with spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, sitting areas, and kitchens with microwaves, fridges, coffeemakers, and washing machines. Rooms at the back overlooking the garden are quieter, while those
on the street side get some traffic noise.
Features
Limited amenities include free breakfast and Wi-Fi plus a computer room and a garden
A free but basic and limited continental breakfast is
provided to all guests and includes cereal, toast, coffee, and
juice, but little else. Guests wanting more variety can order a cooked breakfast (for a fee). Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and there's a computer room, faxing, and photocopying services. There’s also
a garden for guest use in warmer months.
