Some rooms are tiny
The Mercure
London Bloomsbury is an upper-mid-range option housed in an attractive Victorian
building in the bustling and bookish Bloomsbury neighborhood in central London.
Rooms are typically small -- a few could even be considered tiny -- and some are prone to street noise, but amenities are good and interiors are well-maintained. Beyond the 24-hour bar
and brasserie there's not much else in the way of facilities. Overall it's a solid chain hotel option though it's lacking much in the way character. Travelers should consider The
Montague on the Gardens nearby for a lot more personality at around the same
rates.
Scene
Smart and functional chain hotel set in a Victorian redbrick property
The Mercure
London Bloomsbury occupies part of an ornate Victorian redbrick building with
carved stone detailing typical of the neighborhood. Inside, however, the scene
is contemporary with a functional, chain-hotel vibe; picture cool white paneling,
velvet-style furnishings, and the odd splash of color that -- while stylish -- lacks in
the way of warmth or character. Hallways are dotted with spindly potted palms
and a single elevator ferries guests to the seven floors. Clientele is a mixture of vacationing couples and families, as well as a fair share
of business travelers.
Location
On busy Bloomsbury street, a 10 minutes' walk from Oxford Street
The hotel is
located on a busy road in the bookish and generally upscale Bloomsbury
district in the center of London. Set almost opposite leafy Russell Square, the
area is full of a variety of restaurants, pubs, and cafes as well as few retail
outlets. A five minutes' walk away is the British Museum, while 10 minutes on foot
takes you to the start of Oxford Street shopping. Russell Square tube station is
also a five-minute walk away and is just one stop from King's Cross transport
hub and three stops from Piccadilly Circus and the West End. It also connects
to Heathrow Airport in just under an hour.
Rooms
Well-maintained rooms all include Nespresso machines and free Wi-Fi.
The hotel has 114
rooms, all of which are decorated in smart, functional styling with
contemporary furnishings, carpeted floors, and warm polished woods. All are air-conditioned and include free Wi-Fi, tea/coffee facilities (with Nespresso
machines), and flat-screen TVs with room service ordering functionality.
Mini-fridges also provide free bottled water. Bathrooms are modern and
well-maintained with walk-in rainfall showers, heated towel rails, and
illuminated mirrors. Superior rooms are larger and include tubs. Standard room
size varies, with some being very small. While double-glazed windows in rooms means
noise from the busy main road is kept to a minimum, lower-level rooms still get
some disturbance.
Features
Buffet breakfast, 24-hour bar, and colorful brasserie
A buffet
breakfast of hot and cold items is served in the modern dining room,
though it is generally not included in the rates. The hotel bar is open 24 hours to
guests, and the adjoining colorful brasserie serves lunch and dinner. Wi-Fi
is free of charge throughout, but the hotel lacks any spa or health
facilities.
