Bottom Line

Although the Dunes Inn Wilshire has a clean courtyard pool, free Wi-Fi, and free parking, it doesn't offer much else besides tired looking rooms -- some have kitchenettes. For travelers with a car, attractions like Universal City, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and downtown Los Angeles are a 15-minute drive away from the two-pearl property. For those without wheels, the hotel's not convenient to much of anything.

Dunes Inn – Wilshire

Scene

Blast back to the 1950s

Built in the 1950s, the Dunes Inn Wilshire is very much a blast from the past. The lobby has wood-paneled walls, a reception desk behind a glass window, and leather sofas. A potted plant and world map don't do much to modernize the decor. Even the ice and soda machines on the outdoor landing areas look dated. All rooms open to the outdoor courtyard, where the pool is located and although small, is clean and refreshing, surrounded by a couple of tables and umbrellas.

Location

On Wilshire Boulevard

This part of Wilshire Boulevard isn't the greatest street for walking, so the Dunes Inn location is rather inconvenient for the traveler without a car. In about 20-minutes guests can reach the lovely Hancock Park neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and shops. For travelers with a car, Universal City, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Silverlake, Downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, and The La Brea Tar Pits are within a 15-minute drive. Beverly Hills and the Sunset Strip are about half-an-hour away. Los Angeles International Airport is 30-minutes to more than an hour, depending on traffic. There is a Metro Bus stop directly across from the hotel.

Rooms

Upholstery is old and ugly, but kitchenettes are convenient

Most of the 63 non-smoking rooms have a view of the pool, and in spite of their obvious age, are reasonably clean. Still, you can’t help but wonder about all the decades absorbed by the clashing bed covers, faded carpet, and drab curtains. Paint is visibly chipped in many rooms. Bathrooms are small and dark, but tiled and quite clean for their years. Tube-style TVs could use an update. Six rooms offer kitchenettes suitable for cooking complete meals with full size refrigerators and gas ranges, sinks, microwaves, and small tables.

Features

Free parking and Wi-Fi, but no restaurant

Free Wi-Fi and parking are the big bonuses at the Dunes Inn Wilshire, along with the outdoor pool. There are microwaves by the ice and vending machines. The reception desk is open 24 hours and there's a single desktop computer for guests to borrow.
