Bottom Line

The 352-room Hotel Gouverneur Place Dupuis Montreal is an upper-middle-range hotel with great views of the city and a wide array of room categories located just outside of the bustling Latin Quarter. Many guest rooms here are showing wear and tear, though Suites are more modern, with wood floors and higher-quality furnishings. The hotel has an indoor pool, a restaurant and bar, and ample event/meeting space. However, the neighborhood is a bit gritty and the pool is closed at odd hours during the day, which can be especially frustrating for tourists looking to cool off after a day walking around. Guests looking to stay a bit closer to downtown Montreal should consider Hotel Zero 1 Montreal, which has far more stylish and contemporary rooms at a slightly higher price point.

Hotels Gouverneur Montreal

Scene

Business-friendly high-rise property with great views but lackluster decor

The Hotel Gouverneur Place Dupuis Montreal occupies a gray cement high-rise just outside of the Latin Quarter. Much of the interior is a bit dated, with bland carpets, basic wood and vinyl furnishings, and low ceilings all combining to create a less-than-cheerful atmosphere in the common areas and restaurants. There are some dark leather couches and striped armchairs in the lobby near an accent wall decorated with abstract artwork, but the area is dimly lit and not very appealing. Hallways up to the 26th floor of the hotel are particularly old fashioned, with mismatched-colored lighting and garish carpeting, while the upper floors are significantly nicer and more modern. L'Imprevu Bistro Lounge -- the cocktail bar and dinner restaurant -- appears soulless, with brown tile floors and row of brown leather chairs against a dark wooden bar. The hotel caters to its fair share of business travelers, though plenty of tourists also stay here due to its close rooms which can often be had at reasonable rates for Montreal.

Location

In the Latin Quarter, within walking distance of restaurants and attractions

The hotel has a great location near Montreal's Latin Quarter, so long as guests are willing to put up with a bit of urban grit. The lively restaurants and bars of Rue Saint Denis are a five- to 10-minute walk from the hotel while Chinatown is 15 minutes away on foot. The Berri-UQAM Metro hub is just a block away, offering access to three different metro lines traveling throughout the city, and destinations like trendy Mile End take 10 minutes to reach, while a trip to photogenic Jean Talon Market takes about 20 minutes. Notre Dame Basilica, Christ Church Cathedral, Bonsecours Market, and Old Montreal are all within a 15- to 20-minute walk, or 15-minute metro ride, from the hotel. The airport is around half an hour away by car or taxi, or just over an hour from the hotel via a combination of bus and metro.

Rooms

Generic rooms that are mostly dated and worn, though upper-level units are more modern

Classic and Superior Rooms are dated and showing wear and tear, with unattractive striped carpets and heavy drapes, light-wood furniture, louvered closet doors, generic paintings of anonymous European scenes, and wood-paneled headboards all lifted straight from the '90s. These rooms are spacious and clean, though, and are equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, 40-inch flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, irons and ironing boards, and bathrobes (as are higher level bookings). Classic and Superior Room bathrooms are basic and beige, with tiled floors and walls, unattractive granite vanities, bathtub/shower combos, hairdryers, and toiletries. Business Rooms and Junior Suites, located on the 26th floor and above, are a little more fresh and modern, though the vibe is far from chic. Business Rooms have a classic vibe, with striped chairs and plaid carpets complementing dark wood furnishings and subtly patterned walls. They also include in-room French-language newspapers, safes, and glass-walled walk-in showers in the bathrooms, though we noticed wear and tear even in the bathrooms at this booking level as well and bathtub basins could use a deep scrubbing. Junior Suites have wood floors, separate living rooms with sofa-beds, whirlpool tubs, and views of the city, St. Lawrence River, and Mont-Royal.

Features

Indoor saltwater pool, buffet and a la carte cuisine, and business facilities

The on-site Restaurant Le Vignoble serves a buffet breakfast and lunch, as well as a la carte dishes made with seasonal produce at dinnertime, while L'Imprevu Bistro Lounge serves cocktails and a la carte dishes for dinner. Superior Rooms include cold buffet breakfast for two, while Business bookings and higher receive free, full American breakfasts. Children are welcome in the restaurants and discounted rates and kids' menus are available, but they are not allowed in the bar area. The hotel has a small gym with basic cardio and weight equipment next to the indoor saltwater pool, which closes at odd hours during the day that can be inconvenient. Additional amenities include a 24-hour business center (though access is only free for Business Room bookings), free hotel-wide Wi-Fi, and 10 meeting and event rooms for up to 275 people, and dry cleaning services are also available. On-site parking and babysitting are available for a fee and pets are welcome in some rooms for an additional charge.
