Bottom Line
Located in South Myrtle Beach, Summer Wind Inn & Suites is a dated and rundown budget beachfront property earning complaints on everything from bad smells to bugs to broken outlets, but new management took over in 2013, and a renovation was underway when we visited. The hotel's 42 rooms offer free Wi-Fi, microwaves, and mini-fridges (some units have full stoves and refrigerators), and there's a small outdoor pool. Rooms with sea-view balconies are available, and the hotel reports that these have new furnishings, mattresses, and carpeting. There’s no on-site restaurant, but snacks and drinks are available for sale in the lobby. For a similar rates, travelers might want to check out Aqua Beach Inn, a value hotel with fresh, bright rooms that's about a 10-minute drive north of Summer Wind Inn & Suites, and it's located across the street from the beach.

There are not a lot of common areas for guests to congregate at the Summer Wind Inn & Suites. The lobby, with only two straight-back chairs, doesn’t exactly encourage lingering, and the lima-bean-shaped pool, surrounded by the parking lot, is not overly scenic. A wooden walkway connects the parking lot to the white, sandy beach -- just beyond a row of coastal grass -- which is the main draw for guests. This part of the beach isn’t as packed as in the more touristy areas, and so guests have plenty of space to take in the beautiful ocean views.

Summer Wind Inn & Suites is conveniently located on a long stretch of beach on South Ocean Boulevard. The area is mostly residential with other budget hotels nearby. It’s about a five-minute drive to both Whispering Pines Golf Course, Myrtle Beach State Park, and the Family Kingdom Amusement Park, a 10-minute drive to Ripley's Believe It or Not, and a 20-minute drive to Pirates Voyage. There are a handful of casual dining spots within walking distance of the hotel, and Myrtle Beach International Airport is within a 10-minute drive.

Some rooms have kitchens with full stoves, including ovens. Free Wi-Fi and cable TV channels are offered. Some rooms are pet-friendly, and both smoking and non-smoking rooms are available. Rooms with balconies offering ocean views are available, and the hotel reports that some of these have undergone renovation, and have new furnishings, mattresses, and carpeting.
