Scene
Value motel with hot springs and mud baths
Most guests come to the Golden Haven to take advantage of its spa facilities, which include hot springs-fed tubs and mud baths. The grounds have had some updated landscaping, with native flora planted between parking spots, and fountains add a touch of tranquility to the mid-century exteriors. The clubhouse and small carpeted lobby have a dated look, and as is often the case at hot springs, the air smells slightly of sulfur around the spa and the hot spring pool.
Location
On a quiet, mostly residential street on the north side of town
The hotel is set back from Lincoln Avenue -- the main road that runs through the center of town -- in a residential neighborhood. Restaurants, golfing, shopping, and spa attractions are still only a short walk away, and getting to many of the area's wineries only requires a short drive. California’s Old Faithful Geyser and the Petrified Forest are each within a five- to 10-minute drive of the hotel. San Francisco is about a two-hour drive to the south.
Rooms
Motel rooms with modern interiors, some with hot tubs or saunas
The 28 rooms come in a variety of options, and some have private saunas or hot tubs. Most are carpeted motel-style rooms with direct outdoor entry. The rooms are deceivingly generic from the outside, but inside feature elegant, updated decor, including dark-wood furnishings and simple but elegant artwork on the walls. Larger Superior Rooms have wood-paneled walls and vaulted ceilings, and two also have private saunas and exposed wood walls. Nine of the rooms have their own whirlpool hot tubs in the main living areas. Cottage Rooms are housed in a second building. All units have flat-screen TVs that range in size from 25 to 40 inches, as well as mini-fridges, and coffeemakers Bathrooms vary in size and layout, but most are spacious and have either tiled walk-in showers or shower/tub combos.
Features
Full spa with mud baths and indoor pool, plus outdoor recreation that includes bocce courts
The hotel's star attraction -- its spa and mud baths -- are housed in a dingy but functional room, and massages and facials can be arranged in one of the adjacent treatment rooms. There's also an indoor swimming pool that's fed by spring water along with two additional hot tubs. The clubhouse is in separate building in the backyard and features a communal kitchen, a lounge with couches, a TV, and some some fitness equipment. Outside, there's a picnic area with a fire pit and plentiful covered seating on a patio. Nearby are two big bocce ball courts, ping-pong, badminton, and a pool table. Bicycles are also available for guest use free of charge and free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the property.
